Description
Me and my Brother took a trip up to Hatchers Pass, Alaska. It was legit, we just trail blazed up sick rocks and chilled in tight caves. so much fun. thats me on the rock, its kind of difficult to tell how high up we are, but it gives a bit of an idea I guess.Related content

People need to look past the aesthetics and look at the photo. It's amazing- especially the fact it was taken with a point and shoot nor edited (i.e. equipment does not matter).
Keep it up buddy!

Hey! First, congratulations on the DD!
Now, even though it doesn't seem like you want critiques... I'd still like to try...
If you can re-visit the spot, I'd definitely go back, because this has a lot of potential. I have a lot of "idea shots" laying around, things that I'd like to revisit and retry.
Beautiful spot, and here are a few options I can see for the area.
.You could try getting on the ground, see a few blades of grass peek up from the bottom, gentle slope, then SKYFIELDMOUNTAINS WOW. You know? Haha. Start simple, basic, and lead up to this spectacular view.
.You could simply try from the same spot, make the colors pop a bit, so the full majesty can come across.
.You might bring a model back, have them standing on the edge, but put them on the left or the right, so as to make it more eye-catching.
One thing I would do on a trip back, would be to try to keep the cars on the right side out of the picture. It breaks the tone of natures majesty for me.
Well, sorry for the insane amount of WORDS on here, especially if you didn't want critiques. But, this is just the way I would try it if you ever went back

Well, it's not so much that I don't want critiques, it's just that this was never created to be technically correct image. When you strip down the technique, take away the post processing, you are left with just the idea. an "Idea shot" is a perfect way to phrase it, in fact so I really do appreciate the idea's I've received, it's just that I know that this isn't a great picture, just a great idea. I already know several things that I could do to make this much better before I put it on my hard drive.
That being said, I absolutely looove reading other's ideas for future photos. It no only gets my mind going, but yours as well, its win-win Bringing a model would be a blast! The only problem is that it's a bit of a climb, so it would need to be a friend of mine (which I think I can ask).
Bringing the view closer to the ground is a cool idea, then I could play more with DoF too. It's maybe a little cliche, but if I took the time to bring a model out there I would definitely try it, at least to see what happens.
So I really do appreciate the critiques, even if I guess it doesn't seem like it. Well, and it depends too. What you're saying is "this is a really cool idea, go back, be more prepared, and reshoot it. spend some time on it, it could be both an amazing idea and picture." That is perfect, thank you thank you thank you
What some people are saying, however, is "just slip it into photoshop and polish it up a bit. it will only take a few seconds." This isn't a good photo, technically, so putting it in photoshop and changing things around would just make it a fake. The post processing would buzzkill the idea, if that makes sense.
So to any one else reading this, please bring me your ideas! I'm more than happy to hear them
And thank you very much Katrisa, good luck with your idea shots I guess its not so much that I don't like the critiques, it's just that Im hearing things that I already know. If people browsed through my gallery they would know that too, but no worries
Im just really glad to get my first DD!!
hahaha oh and also, I should be the one apologizing for the insane amount of words

Haha, I'm happy for such a positive response!
Yeah, I hate people who will take a crappy snapshot, and change it in photoshop to try to make it look nice. Honestly, it ruins the integrity of the photo for me. Of course, if it's a photomanip, that's a completely different story!
I can definitely see that you possess the technical ability, but I still wanted to offer up some ideas, mainly because I'd love to see this scene embellished! You could even do a study of each season... actually that's pretty cliche. Maybe different weathers, or different people. This spot could definitely become a project! Ah, look at me, I'm dreaming up a million ideas for a spot I don't have!
So, thank you, and good luck with forming this photograph, I'm sure the final product (if you even decide to revisit it) will be amazing.

Quite like the way you got the sky blue without making the picture all dark. Kinda wondering about 2 things though:
1) Did you try using a higher aperture?
2) Did any of the mountains in the background have the same angle as the rock in the foreground? If so, tried to make them more in a line?
Quite like your gallery though, keep up the good work ^^,

wyslet In reply to melkeheksa [2009-11-22 04:17:00 +0000 UTC]
well it was taken with a point and shoot, so aperture adjustments weren't much of an option.
As far as making a line, Im not sure. I don't think so though. what might work is making it more parallel to the road though
thanks

beautiful shot! it reminds me how small we are in a big world!
and don't listen to the rude comments, their just jelous that they didnt get picked. and I think you should leave the picture the way it is. to much editing will bring the artist touch away.
anyway, you deserve a DD! congrats!

LOL there is alot of good climbing and hiking to be had up there, we were going to do Archangel Valley, but at the turn off some woman on a tricycle (SERIOUSLY!) rearended me, and after that whole fiasco... we decided we were just going to pack it in and call it a day (we had already done the top of several of the faces in the bown back by the mine), it definitely is pretty on a good day... of course I seem to recall the clouds had this lovely habbit of rolling in and giving you that deliciously depressing grey crap and raining on us... LOL
Funny, similar sort of things happen here in Hawaii, only here the clouds blow off as quick as they roll in, well that and its in the mid 80s all the time.

It's sad to see people discrediting this image because it's not technically perfect. You know what? As a photograph, it sucks. Yep, too right, it does - it's woeful. However when you look at the theme and the description, it makes it a work worthy of a DD, so bloody well done to wyslet and the nay-sayers can go sit on something splintery.
If you ever get back up there, I would position the guy (is that you?) on the rock, looking outwards. I would also attack that view with a wide-angle lens to get as much of the dramatic hillsides out of it that I could. On a cloudy day it would be spectacular! A good tip is to remember the Rule of Thirds. Divide the image into three length-ways and width-ways. Positioning areas of interest at any of those cross-sections in the thirds will instantly make the image more dynamic.
