Ok, this is just me - I'm a big time animal lover.
Did the thought ever occur to you to feed it some ground up pain pills and just snap it's neck once it dozed off? I think it's kind of cruel to let a creature suffer, slowly dying for two days, so you could get some good shots. Not trying to come off as a jerk here, we all have different priorities, but what compelled you to let it sit there crying while you snapped away?
They are good shots - I just don't think that anything makes that kind of pain worthwhile.

first off, I can agree to some that art is an expression of pain, joy, and all those other emotions that we are unable to find words for - however, on that note it is an internal pain or the capturing of the pain of another who is aware and does not object to the capturing of the pain for art - as in the photojournalist who spend time in third world countries. This was a bird. A poor dying bird. If you have no "right" to determine the outcome of this bird's suffering, what "right" do you have to exploit it for your own creative gain?
I understand that death and the act of dying can be a beautiful thing - artistically speaking - and if you had captured these images and then given that bird the release it so sorely needed (and gained after two more days of suffering) that MIGHT be a bit more understandable ... but not by much.
My objection to the art is not it creative and artistic gravity. It pulls very fiercely at the emotions and from a completely technical viewpoint the composition and lighting of the piece is exquisite. I only call into question the morality of an artist who would make this kind of judgement call.
Art, while a mean for us to express a depth of emotion and experience that we are unable to universally comminucate through any other means, should take a back seat to the reality of suffering and pain around us.

Be a human first. An artist second.

no pain for art? what is art but (among other things) an expression of pain... for that matter what is life but an expression of pain?

i wanted to do something of that nature... but then i thought about it and what right have i to determine the its life is useless or that it has no will to live?

i love the anatomy of this creature, the fold around the corner of the mouth, his eye, and the little spray of feathers on his cheek. a beautiful thing.

The face! The eyes!

Is...is it...dead yet? I'm afraid to ask.

If so, bury it for God's sake...

Amazing, there is so much emotion portrayed though the eyes. It was defiantly worth the effort for this picture.
