Well, I'm thinking about animating the Guardians of Ga'Hoole series...what do you guys think? I'm an amateur at animating but I'm a fast learner and have been considering doing this for a while.
It would have one episode per chapter, so about 27 or more episodes per book (I'm only focusing on the first book right now though, lets not get ahead of our selves X3), and If I continue with it, exactly 15 'seasons', one per book. Yikes. But It should be fun and make could practice.
And that doesn't mean I've dropped my comic either, mind you, thats still my main 'project', and I'm so close to picking it back up again I can taste it...its wild cherry flavored.
Mkay, haha, so there's a badly drawn unfinished picture of a barn owl near the end because the file had an error for some reason and wouldn't let me continue working on it, it wouldn't open for me, but luckly I had this file. I started another new one to finish, I'll upload that after I'm done with this.
This obviously shows Soren and his sibs, Eglintine and Kludd. The picture of them together is supposed to be how they'll look in the begining, like before Soren is pushed from the nest. Any suggestions please???
All drawn in sloppily flash since I will (hopefully) be animating this with flash. I won't be using voices, but I will be using music, and maybe even some owl vocals if I am able, I'm still not that good with adding sound to animations.
Any critique, suggestions, tips, or tricks concerning the designs or flash 100% welcome!

I cant help but feel it is related otherwise what reason would you have to post on this at all if not to make a discreet comment on my work.
First of all these designs are ancient, I have newer (but still old) designs in my gallery. Secondly, I didn't design any of them to look "evil", I designed them to look like individuals of their species, and to reflect their personality and values outwardly.
While designing something as "evil" is a narrow way of describing it, it is a very important element in visual story telling. Sometimes bias comes into play in designs but it has less to do with our collective opinions on outer beauty than it does of communicating something important through art. It depends on what you want to say using your designs.
You've made a generalized comment on something much broader than you might realize. It is not usually a good thing if you cant differentiate your antagonist from your protagonist unless that relates to the statement you are trying to make.

The difference being?Β
Kludd is evil, and he comes across as evil visually. It's not meant to knock your work- it's just a convention that I take issue with. You say it's "an important element," but it's only important if we continue to give it importance (just like any other symbolism).
I know exactly how broad it is. If you can't tell a character's alignment from their actions and words, then something is wrong, imho.Β
Another convention of storytelling I don't like:
"Who writes happy stories where everyone is mature and has calm conversations about anything and everything? . . . Truth is stranger than fiction . . . Iβve wanted to devise my own curriculums, because . . . well, shouldnβt stories and games be both to entertain and teach and inspire? Humans have deemed the central purpose of literature, a story, to be conflict. The four types. Man against Man. Man against Society. Man against Nature. Man against Self. But, what about man enjoying conversing with his fellow man? Man enjoying studying his own and other societies? Man enjoying and savoring nature? Man enjoying his own wonderfully, intricately, divinely, mysteriously bestowed mind? Learning new things? So why is it different for stories? They teach that it is the conflict that matters. Pain. It supposedly makes it more interesting for readers."Β

I think you are over reacting to a small detail, and I don't think you bothered to look at my new character designs. You are making this statement on a drawing I did when I was 14.Β

As you can see the design is more subtle, but even if I'm referring to the old design, no, I didn't design him as evil. I designed him using the colors of both of his parents, which I designed in an updated version of his file, and added one additional color as well as more features to make him an individual.

Those were - the reddish brown color around his face and eyes, and making his face scruffy. I chose those colors to signal he is different from Soren but come from the same parents.Β
I did not design him to be evil. I designed him to look unique and a member of his family, and a bit grumpy - because that is his personality. If you are telling me that giving him a reddish hue and making him look grumpy is wrong, then I'm at a loss.Β
You are defining his features as evil because you already KNOW he is evil. Had you not known he was evil, would you still make that same accusation? I find that extremely narrow minded and hypocritical. The only importance is the one you are giving by claiming he looks evil. YOU are choosing to decide that he looks evil so YOU are the one judging by appearances and placing an importance on outer beauty.
By that logic any character that looks "evil" automatically is "evil". So I guess Batman isn't a superhero because he is dark and looks mean. That would mean any character that looks "good" is automatically "good", right? Your logic is flawed. Good characters can look bad and bad characters can look good, and sometimes they fall into a grey area because good and evil, and appearances, are not as black and white.Β
But first impressions are important and natural. Its what draws interest and protects us using our first instinct, but they can be wrong, which allows the element of surprise and a lesson in not judging a book by its cover. The fun is figuring out if your first guess is right. Which is a lesson we all learn and continue to learn as we grow up because none of us are free from prejudice even if we like to think so.Β
A character design is supposed to clue you in to what that character is like and give you hints to their history. That is why it is a part of story telling. You are supposed to learn something (weather right or wrong) by looking at them.Β
If you think something is evil by the way it looks, that is your flaw.Β
I suggest you read a little on the fundamentals of character design before you critique someones choice of giving an owlet a moody face.Β

Again, I don't think it was your work in particular that set off that thought. I've been doing a lot of deep thinking about storytelling anyway. It just happened to be vaguely related. Hence why I apologized for randomly rambling.Β
Was your intention to make him less evil looking already? If so, that coincidence in itself is fascinating.Β
I'm pretty sure he would come off as evil regardless, with the narrowed eyes and reddish tint. But . . . again . . . that's not a strike against you since pretty much everyone adheres to designing characters like that. (A character design is supposed to clue you in to what that character is like and give you hints to their history. That is why it is a part of story telling. You are supposed to learn something (weather right or wrong) by looking at them.) That's storytelling and character design as we currently accept it. Your third and second to last statements seem to contradict one another. :/

I accept your apology but it may be a good idea to find more appropriate places to make comments regarding your thoughts on design and story so you don't accidentally rub someone the wrong way.Β
I wasn't TRYING To make him less EVIL I just wanted to improve his design. I didn't MAKE him look EVIL to begin with. I improved my idea and decided I wanted to change his design, that is all. How EVIL he looked was never in the equation. By saying my intention had anything do to with EVIL is COMPLETELY disregarding what I previously said, and rude.Β
I am not contradicting myself, I'm trying to explain that it is two sides of the same coin. First impressions and truth. You make an assumption and them learn about it by investigating the story and character. Weather or not your first impression was right or not is the discovery. By your way of thinking, you think you already know whether or not a character is evil or good by they way they appear.Β
EVIL is not apart of my or many peoples creative process. That is a label you have placed on the design due to what you consider to "look" evil. It is a very basic way to judge a character.Β
I have no idea how else to design a character than by making them match there character and story and any other way would probably give off the wrong idea, have them look completely out of place, or make no sense.Β
If you want to make a story where your first impressions of a character are misleading, then be my guest. That can be done correctly. But to say its the only way, that designing based on the characters personality, history, values, and environment is wrong, then that is unacceptable. There is no ONE RIGHT WAY. There are multiple. And it is not any kind of statement on outer beauty. If you are judging a character to be EVIL by their appearance, YOU are the one judging based on appearances and YOU are the one who needs to stop contradicting yourself.Β

Haha, yep XD The only hint of a mowhawk Kludd has with my design is his downy tuft on top of his head, but that'll shed out ;D
I hope to continue this, but so far I only have the opening theme song complete. I still plan on completing at least the first episode/chapter, but it might not happen (soon anyway).
