Percy’s daemon is a large, imposing, specialized species of raptor, which possesses unique physical characteristics and exhibits unique behavior that all are meant to assist the bird in hunting and catching its primary food source, fish. Everything about them, from their specially designed eyes, to their talons, to the way they fly supports a very specific and efficient lifestyle. However, even though they are habitual and quite particular about their diet and habitats, this doesn’t mean that ospreys can’t adapt to their surroundings or to new situations, as they are one of the few raptors that have world-wide distribution, and many aspects of osprey behavior vary tremendously between locations. Ospreys are usually seen singly or in pairs and are also monogamous, but in some parts of its range, the osprey is loosely colonial. Those that work together to hunt tend to be more successful, but they are still highly territorial, and defend their individual nests, mates, and offspring with surprising ferocity.
Percy is cerebral, focused, and collected, while Iolanthe is his more emotional, playful, self-doubting side.
NAME ANALYSIS
The name Iolanthe is composed of the Greek words iole “violet” and anthos “flower,” hence “violet flower.” The pet form of the name, Io, is also a reference to Greek mythology, where the mortal woman Io was forcibly cast out of her home for initially rejecting Zeus’ advances, and was cursed to wander the earth without rest by Zeus’ wife Hera as revenge.
