I just wanna say thank you to everyone that +favs this, but really I don't see what you all see in it. Albeit not the worst image in my gallery, it is certainly not the best. Not to me at least

Wheres the uh, I don't know what they're called, but they are extensions of the vertebrae near the shoulders which makes the whithers of the horse?
The horse bit has little support for the human half. Those vertebrae extensions are the foundations, or part of, for the very powerful muscles in the front quarter of horses.
The centaur as it would be covered in flesh would be very front heavy, with the hind end or croup rising well above the shoulders, probably giving it the appearance of having little of its weight in it's back half.
Almost like one of those chihuahuas you see on funny video shows that have something heavy in their mouths and their butts are in the air.
Perhaps, if you think to do this again, find a way to make the vertebrae of the whithers blend with the humans, so the joining is more smooth. Perhaps enlarging a bit of the human lower spine to resemble the horses's vertebrae, and leaning the human half forward a bit?

Still, lovely concept and well rendered. Well worth a .

Um, actually, it's just the one of them that's like that. The rest of them are horny, horny beast. Stealing women, you know how that goes.

I'd been desensitized to mythical creatures due to heavy exposure to the fantasy/myth genre, but this picture actually made me feel the sort of awestruck horror our ancestors could have felt at the idea of such a creature.

It isn't so much whether the image is not your best (although it certainly is amazing!) but for people that write a lot of fantasy stories and draw a lot of fantasy artwork and wish to know their characters inside and out, this is a HUGE help that can help further their work. Myself included! You did a great job on showing where the spine connects the whole body together! I am so used to seeing the dragon x-rays or naga x-rays; you are certainly the first centaur and it is AMAZING!

can somebody explain to me how a centaur would sleep? every image of one i see their human torso is upright, but i doubt sleep is very possible in such an uncomfortable position. and the odd curvature of their spines at the transition of species might make reclining/leaning forward impossible. help!

ecurps In reply to blazeismypuppy [2011-01-01 11:08:24 +0000 UTC]

in some depictions, centaurs' front hips and legs are attached as they would be on a normal human and others show the human part of the body attached to a horse's "shoulders" and neck as a human "head".
one can assume that centaurs sleep either: 1) they are able to bend at their first "waist" and lay upon some form of bedding similar to humans when they sleep at a desk or table; or 2) they sleep on their sides. getting to their knees would have to be a quick motion from a lying to kneeling to standing and would most likely require many years of training to be swift enough for the centaur to be of any use in emergencies.
(sorry. my imagination makes this stuff kinda scary when pertaining to fantasy creatures. )

it's fabulous! i have a much clearer concept of centaurs now, thankyou very much! i'd imagine they go with leaning on a tree or sleeping on an elevated bed, as you stated. i imagine the standing up would be too risky in case of a predator, much like wild horses.

I think the weirdest part of a centaur is the fact that it has two bellies.....
If it got pregnant, would the baby be in the human-half womb, or the horse-half womb?

What a beautiful representation of an impossible anatomy.^^ actually seeing the skeletal structure does help provide some gravity for a reference though. Thanks for making this, 'cause I'll probably use it for a ref.

Haha! really cool, I always used to wonder about the spine of a centaur, when it gets to the human body part it takes a violent lurch upwards, i wonder if its painful for them to hold it in that position all the time?! haha, or maybe it means they can't bend down???

I think the reason we like it is cause we FINALLY get to see how the skeleton of a centaur would look like. Too often we hear how it would be structurally impossible, due to the connection point between horse and human halves. But now we can finally see how it would be done. (Even though I see it is part of the leg bone

GermanShepherd-Wolf In reply to varsaigen [2009-10-04 02:12:36 +0000 UTC]

i agree with you. the reason it looks like its attached to the legbone is because it's behind it. the human spine is the neck vertebrae.

I actually found this image rather useful--I've been trying to work out some character designs for a new game, and one of them is a centaur....seeing a concept sketch of the skeletal structure is very important because of the point where the two seperate creatures fuse. It helped me visualize the muscle blend that I wanted to use for Stormcrow. Not to mention it is a very talented sketch--nice work. (I just wish it was a little bigger for those of us with poor eyesight.)

Nice one. Looks really real. But here's one for ya: where do centaurs keep their organs? I their horse bits or human bits? And it seems obvious to me that the female centaur would have to have a womb in her horse-part otherwise the baby would get too big and she'd fall on her face...
Just a thought. :S
