Description
A typical warrior of the Abenaki of Quebec during Queen Anne's War at the very start of the 1700s. He wears the French Capot, a hooded winter coat he got from his French allies. Despite popular stereotypes of woodland natives in nothing but buckskins wielding bow and arrows, many tribes would wear clothing very similar to what Europeans had at the time. A hunting frock, or large overshirt, or Capot was popular, and of course, by this time, all warriors would own a trade musket, which was equal to the arms of any militiaman (with exception to rifled muskets) or infantry, which they were very effective with in hit-and-run tactics.
The Abenaki tribes of Quebec, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine were closely allied to France. They were notorious for their brutal raids into the English Colonies. One of the notorious raids happened in Deerfield Massachusetts which a number of survivors later wrote about their ordeals during enslavement, including their brutal frigid trek back to Canada in captivity, and their eventual release back to the English. These accounts are really captivating reads that I'd strongly suggest taking a look at if you're into pre-revolution American history.
