Description
A typical English soldier before Cromwell's 'New Model Army' was introduced in the mid 17th century. The attire and equipment of this foot soldier is fairly lightweight and simple: felt hat, sleeveless leather buffcoat over a wool jacket, and knee-breeches, two or three accoutrements of war would be worn over the chest including his sword baldric, his ammo bandolier, and a linen haversack for misc items and food. The matchlock musket was the precursor to the flintlock musket, it was heavy, often weighing over 15lbs (doesn't seem like much, but try lugging that weight around the countryside without a sling). The matchlock fired balls sometimes reaching up to .75 cal which is about the diameter of a quarter. Firearm technology was still in its baby years and bayonets still had a few decades to show up, so the matchlock also doubled as a massive club, the stock of the gun is designed intentionally heavy and the gun overall is fairly crude and rugged to withstand heavy impacts (against skulls).

First rate picture, last year we held an Irish re-enactment of one of Cromwell's sieges i've handled one of these muskets and they're a pig to aim. Β The soldiers of the time were on crap wages and their officers would often embezzle the little cash that reached the regiment.

This is fantastic. I love how detailed your work is. Everything looks so perfect to me, especially the musket. I forgot to comment before but I stared at this for a while when I first noticed it. Love it!
