Description
Not the best scan, because this was -so- large, but I was trying to focus it on the parts I liked. Mostly his hair.Copic Markers and ink on onion skin.
No. I can't afford to special order copic paper, or rather I won't because I enjoy working it with this way and don't really see the point of extra expense when this is for fun.

He seems like the mix of two of my characters He has the hair and the earrings of one and the face (the scars and the expression) and the hood of the other. But I suppose there are many characters like them
Great work! I love this!

I admit to not having looked at your gallery before now, ^_^; But yeah I think the scar thing goes in trends. The hood was semi random, since I change my characters clothing most times I draw them. I'm glad you like it though! I've got a few pictures of him in my gallery, some creepier than others. C_C

Actually Kate bapped me and said it was a type of velum, but the paper type is also sometimes called 'onion skin' because it's very thin and can be sorta seen through. Means I can readily trace over pencil lines with a pen so I can color more easily.

ooooh okay thats what I thought you were talking about but my mind went to seeing you pulling skin layers off an onion and making stinky paper with them ...paper that might taste good with sour cream o0;;
does the velum minimize the streaky thing that sometimes happens when you use markers?

It seems to quite a bit! Especially with this particular paper,*pokes it* it also softens the colors on the marker set, so it makes it easier to layer -up- to a good skin tone. <3

I just learned that little trick XD I didn't know you could build the color up like that.
though normally I just use markers to fill in the basic color of...whatever area that is.
other than that I don't have any talents with markers...except getting them everywhere but the paper
you know of any good how to marker books or tutorials for dummies like me? xD

It must be quite the task to rememeber the exact design of all the scars... or is that the purpose other than fun for making these two reference shots?

His back scars I sorta fudged a little bit, but his face scars, if I need to repeat them,I drag out his original concept drawings. ^_^
Although if you want -real- placement nightmares....Harls tattoos are for you.

I was talking art nerd with a guy who does some great marker work, and he used Vellum. He swore on the stuff, and from the looks of it, he wasnt lying. And vellum is relativly cheep.

Yeah but I'd have to drive a little over an hour to get it around here, thats where the nearest place to get reliable velum is. <:/

Eww. Thats a shame. No Michels or anything, huh? I used to have that problem, but then we got a realy awsome art discount store a few minuts away. That place is my second home now. XD
Push come to shove, the interwebs will have a few places with some.

Over an hour or so away on the interstate I can get to Michaels, the best we have otherwise is a Walmart, and they really don't cary some great stuff.
Ende actually says the particular 'onion skin' she brought home is a velum paper, so it works out, and I do very much enjoy working with it. Which is actually the best you can do with art I think. I always figure no matter how great the medium, unless you like working with it, you're never going to get as good out of it unless you enjoy it.

Aluchan In reply to xaotl [2007-03-05 09:59:15 +0000 UTC]
I dont think ive ever heard of the onion skin though. Thats interesting. Thats realy crapy you guys dont have a decent store around.
I belive you have to enjoy what you do. I didnt like coloring with colored pencil untill i used them and a colorless blender on smooth bristol. It was a magical experiance. XD and in the end, like you said, art should be fun.

Sometimes I make a run and then come away with way too much stuff. Though I gotta admit, I -hated- markers before these. It was like a life altering coloring event. XD
