Yes, typically I start with pencil - I make a sketch of the basic forms and outlines. Sometimes I try to draw the details as much as possible at this stage (even make a completely finished pencil drawing) , this will help me when I start working with color. But somethimes I start to work directly in color, without pencil sketch - I usually use this method for landscape works (for example - my "The Gates" series).

Interesting!Β What makes you want to start with traditional pencil over simply using a digital pencil-like brush for the beginning phase?

Because it's easier and more convenient for me to control the accuracy, dynamics and expression of lines and strokes by traditional method.
Digital method is good for painting and even for sketching with broad, wide brushes - when you need to construct a form or a silhouette by the wide brushstrokes or tonal spots. Also digital method is convenient when you need to draw a smooth, straight, antialiased lines (for example - when you need to create some very tidy and clean commercial lineart) - there are a lot of digital brushes in different programs with smoothing and antialising algorithms.

I have only dabbled with a tablet, and have yet to try the fancier sorts with the built-in monitor (cintiq?), but I have had a very similar experience.Β I just can't control lines with a tablet like I can with a traditional pen, especially if it is a thinner line or handwriting.Β Glad I'm not the only one!
