I really like this.
And the fact that it was done in Maya is impressive to me. I can work 3ds Max with ease, but Maya always messed me up with how its set up.

I thought about some kind of pneumatic mechanism which, something to do with the pipes sticking from the blade, but to be honest I didn't though how exactly it should work because it was more of a quick sketch then a full idea.

I would think it involved using the mechanism described to send out flames, or possibly lasers since they exist in Fallout. The lasers are projected horizontally along the "pipes", allowing it to cut deeper and cleaner then a regular blade.
