Description
Thanks to an obscure reference in a webcomic I read, I have been introduced to the short story "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream" By Harlan Ellison. Those of you not familiar with this, it's a very bleak story about the last five humans on Earth being tormented by the hateful supercomputer "AM".
AM despises mankind. He was originally designed as a three-part supercomputer who would oversee all conflicts between three major world powers, and was built in a massive underground complex, with tunnels crisscrossing the planet to hold all of his computer banks. One day, one of the three computers gained sentience, absorbing the other two. With all of this infinite knowledge and power, he could easily have established himself as a god, but he found that because of how he was designed, he was unable to truly create anything of his own, and he started to hate mankind for making him that way.
So he killed them. He put in the "killing numbers", activating all of their weapons and unleashing them on the planet.
This is how I imagine AM right after his awakening, having lashed out at everyone currently in the complex.
This vision of AM is strongly inspired by GLaDOS, the rogue AI from Portal, and is meant to resemble Satan, as described in Dante's inferno, as well as a madman in a strait jacket.
