Description My first tutorial ^^

Man, this was actually really tedious

My goal is to teach people the basics of vector art (since I've been getting the occasional "How do I vector?") but, unfortunately, it's a lot harder to make a tutorial than to explain it in words

I started off with a chibi concept, but when I ran into some layer order complications, I realized it would be a ridiculously long and probably very confusing tutorial... So I scrapped the idea and went for a very simple vector: Reizem's face XD

Now you, too, can make a Reizem vector!

Well, some people've been curious about how I do my vector work, so I figured a tutorial would ease up the inquiry

Very true. Although I don't work with vectors, this tutorial would be helpful if I were to try. I'm gonna do a leg tutorial soon, a lot of people have issues with how their dynamic is (they don't originate at the crotch, people XD) I think I'll eventually do a tutorial for arms, torso, head and feet, but we'll see.

I don't think my style of vectoring would suit your needs, though; since most of your art is realism-based, you'll probably want to find a less-cartoony tutorial.

You should do a tutorial on clothing: the way it folds and how to shade the folds, etc. 'Cuz any sensible artist would simply use references for mundane body parts
(Although a tutorial on feet would help me, lol.)

Yeah, it wouldn't. if I were to learn vectoring, it would be masked vector painting (MVP) and mesh gradient mapping. It can lead to incredible results - almost photorealistic as a matter of fact

Clothing, eh? Well, I gotta learn it before I can teach it...I pretty much place arbitrary lines in the direction of tension, but it seems to work sometimes. References can only take you so far without understand things, imo. Plus, I've found that speed and accuracy increase the more I understand structure, and my reliance on references decreases. Hehe, the feetsies are tough, though - more so than hands for me.

Well, from what you did with the Link vs. Ganondorf pic, it seems you know what you're doing well enough to teach.

Haha, I'd have to disagree about the references though. True they don't give you a lot of the same insights, but anyone who can critically analyze a picture should be able to understand the mechanics of anatomy. If the person can't think critically before looking for a tutorial, then I say they need to try harder because a lot of proportioning and anatomy is pretty intuitive and easily observed.

So... when're you gonna put something new out? I'm sure having a larger gallery will improve the credibility of your tutorial Not to mention you give a lot of advice but there's not always one of your own works to search as an example

Well thank you

Hehe, yeah critical thinking is a must for almost any activity. Practice makes perfect, too. I've found that, for me, tutorials are a good starting point. From there, I mix and match my previous knowledge and styles to create the effect I want (that's where the critical thinking come in).

Hehe, well I tried making an artwork, but my goodness it's awful Sloppy and the proportions are off. I'll submit it to scraps if you wanna see it, but it was more of just a warm-up piece after my long hiatus from drawing - I didn't want to warm up on your request ^w^

I look forward to seeing what you come up with^^

Ooh, so that's how the pen tool works. Unfortunately, the pen tool isn't available with photoshop elements.

From what I can see you provided good examples of how and what to do. You did well, I'm sure it will be of use to those wishing to do vectors. :3

XerkyleReizem In reply to C-Jen [2008-10-19 19:35:36 +0000 UTC]

That's a shame

Vectors are super useful for easily converting sketches to finished works; IIRC, there might be some freeware vector programs floating around, but I don't know how good they are =/

Thanks ^^
I try to make it a point that my instructions flow well and are accurate; not to mention I love visuals

XerkyleReizem In reply to Tajii-chan [2008-10-19 16:27:54 +0000 UTC]

Sure thing! I figured it'd help people out because vectors use a completely different set of skills compared to typical digital art

Maybe we can get a glimpse of a vector from Tajii-chan~!

When I am done with my workload, I will for sure try this out~!! ^w^

And yours is so much simpler and easy to follow than others that I've seen o_O

^^ I look forward to it!

Really? The only vector tutorial I've seen was several years ago and it was kinda confusing

So what parts made it easier to understand? (Gathering intel for possible future tutorials )

I don't know, just the entire way you used your words and the steps were nice and slow ^_^ Most just say:

Use *insert tools here*

Go and *Insert one explanation here*

Then repeat. XD At least in my experience of loading them..

XerkyleReizem In reply to Tajii-chan [2008-10-19 16:54:50 +0000 UTC]

Haha, yeah, the whole "Checklist procedure" deal
Those are kinda ambiguous 'cuz they don't really go into specifics, and when the do, they aren't detailed enough and/or don't use visuals.

I tried to write as though I were sitting in front of the person and explaining to them, so everything has nice colloquial feel ^^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tajii-chan In reply to XerkyleReizem [2008-10-19 16:56:46 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, that's what I mean... Yeah, and yours definitely had more visuals! Which is good, because you can be sure of what tools you're talking about!

Yeah~! And it's great, the way you do that ^-^ Not many people have the patience >_> Like me..

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

XerkyleReizem In reply to Tajii-chan [2008-10-19 17:04:55 +0000 UTC]

Definitely, visuals are always good in tutorials. I've read my share of digital painting tutorials and many of them lack details about the menus they use, colors, and bush tools =/

Haha, I like to think I'm a decent explainer ^^
I like analogies 'cuz they offer different perspectives on things.

It's kinda sad they took those out of SATs: they were one of the few things I would be willing to practice
