I practiced improving my understanding of bodies through this study where the subject is taking a selfie.

I’ve historically not been someone who takes selfies myself and have been curious about what people get out of them. People have many different relationships with themselves, their image and cameras. Some people relate to it as a form of documentation, having a pointer in a chaotic world, something that can feel true and objective amongst the gaslighting. Others have a representation of self that they want others to desire, their photography being more about their relationship with others than their relationship with themselves.

I’m curious how people’s relationships with self photography develop as our systems of photography change. With the rise of VTubers and other digital representations there are more opportunities for people to catch different attributes of self to express or enhance to meet various objectives which has lead to a lot increase in people’s ability to capture different parts of their expression, keeping aspects of emoting while losing others.

People value such different things when expressing who they are.

What is it that matters to you when something is expressing you? What are the things that are meaningful to capture and why? Are the things you prioritize in expression for yourself, for others, or a hybrid of the two? Do you want to express the same things about yourself regardless of medium, would you want a song to say the same thing as a photo to say the same thing as prose or a painting? Does the form in which you’re expressed change which things about yourself you want to show?

May that which represents you accurately express what your priorities are for it and cultivate the relationship with its audience that you desire.
