Born in glory, [redacted] was the fourth daughter of legendary dragon hunters. The world chanted their name and shuddered; much like their parents, their children were trained in dragon hunting. The pair, strong, fearless and loyal, had not failed to produce a child that replicated their strengths, until [redacted] at least. She was a rowdy foal, like many others born with energy and curiosity but unlike the rest of her siblings before her, she could be tamed. She would kick and buck whenever anyone, human or horse, stepped close. She had the legacy of a lifetime but she was not worth the effort. In a lucky moment, they roped her with chains and locked her in a stall.

They left her to rot.

Had the situation been different, she would have kicked the doors down, but she quickly grew malnourished. It was a punishment, she understood. Time had passed and though her will had not broken, nor her temperament cooled down, her body had inevitably given in to the consequences. Physically unable to put up a fight, she was sold to a circus. There was, perhaps, something humans found hilarious in humiliating and mistreating a horse. She would nip and growl at anyone who tried to handle her, so she was left in a cage for people to see "the broken in spirit of a dragon hunter!" They spun stories in her parent's name, and when others doubted the claims, the ringmaster would dare they place a hand in the cage and see how long they would last with it. "Weef" they called her, like the sounds she made when she scraped her hooves against the metal.

Until she understood what they had done to her. If she had been meant to fight dragons, humans wouldn't be much.

She moved quickly, a flash without warning as she clamped her teeth on a kid's arm - a spark in her eyes as she tore the kid's arm from her cage. Panic reached her ears, a piercing shriek as the people around her ran around, but no matter how many times she threw herself against the cage she could not break its bars. The circus sent her to a slaughterhouse and hoped never to see her again. Maynard had bought her on impulse but despite how many times people had told him she was not worth it, he demanded her. Even when she tried to bite him, he still kept his hand close.

He could tell she was tired of fighting the world, so he gave her a place to rest.

Maynard opened her cage and let her run free in a large pasture. The grass was fresh, the water was running over a small stream, the breeze was one of peace. And she could recover. The old man came over daily, sometimes even spent hours of the day just watching her run from one side to the other, kicking and bowing (and she, very irritated, kept at it to intimidate him), with a smile. Like he was proud of her. And every day he would come and offer her his hand. It had been bandaged over and over from the countless times she had bitten it, but as she recovered she realized he hadn't tried to hurt her.

Her bites became softer until the day he offered his callous hand and she put her nose against it.

He understood that she bit and kicked because that was who she was, that she was energetic and excitable. That she wanted to fight the world for what it had done to her and that it took all of her trust to let not attack him. And he was okay with that.
