Chrysalis wasn't actually born a foul insect like many ponies believe, but rather a normal unicorn some thousand years ago. She was a beautiful golden pony, as elegant as any regal mare. She had unique aptitude in the magic of love, which quickly caught the eye of the Eldest Princess, Celestia. Chrysalis was taken in as a pupil and a royal niece. And of course, with the royal connection, came the royal title of "Sheriff" and ownership of her own land. Chrysalis adored the Sun Princess....but even more adored having power over all her subjects. Believing that she become a princess herself, Chrysalis set out upon her subjects with less-than-altruistic actions. Strict curfews were made, high taxes plagued the villages, and the Sheriff was not afraid to demonstrate her "loyalty" to Celestia by punishing those who supported the night. Celestia had no idea what the Sheriff was doing, or how she was tormenting her subjects so. It wasn't until after Nightmare Moon was banished did Celestia find out about her deeds against the Equestrians. Distraught by the loss of her sister and the betrayal of her adopted niece, Celestia cursed Chrysalis and her supporters to take the form of her heart: Ever changing, but always as black as coal and gnarled from corruption. Just as she had fed upon Celestia's love and the love from her subjects, she will feed on love for as long as she remains cursed, or else starve. No longer who they once were, Celestia banished Chrysalis and her subjects into the Badlands, never to torment Equestria again for another thousand years.

In the end, Chrysalis got was her heart desired. She was now Queen of the "Changlings". But it wasn't at all what Chrysalis had imagined, nor wanted. Tormented by how Celestia ripped her destined kingdom from her, Chrysalis plotted revenge in her temporary home, waiting patiently for the Sun Princess to eventually lower her guard. She will have Equestria, one way or the other. It was just a matter of time....

....Don't quite remember WHY I looked up Chrysalis in the dictionary, but lo and behold, this (and an interesting head canon) came out as the result. Have fun! *crawls back into her cave*
