Description

New work. Decided to combine the usual style and the style of the last drawing, and the result was this. My design of a giant dromeosaurid from Jurassic Park. I wanted to portray "Velociraptor" with a cleaner genome and therefore with anatomy closer to the original. Although the greater part of the feathering is still there, I outlined quill-like structures, that repeating arrangement of flight feathers and tail fans of the real prototype. In addition, I did not like that the "raptors" in the film, despite the fact that they are called as scaly, covered with a rather bare skin (except face and legs). For me this aspect is not very similar to the typical reptilian skin. Therefore, this point is also taken into account, as can be seen by the nature of the skin folds and large labial scales. In result turned out a reptilian creature with bird-like anatomy.

Maybe someone will remember this similar work I've done in the past year: www.deviantart.com/xiphactinus… It's not surprising that some of the details, including the pattern of "feathers" are pulled from it.

EDIT: Added the pattern.

Black ballpoint and ink pens, 2018.

Oh how I wish Velociraptor would’ve looked like this instead.

This makes a good compromise between the feathery version popular today and the Eighties-style version that appeared in the novels & films. Crichton was writing a mainstream SF novel, not a treatise on paleontology, so he went with what was expected back in the day. (Or was making what was expected part of Jurassic Park's original flaws?) I could have seen this sort randomly coming out of the labs, since no real batch sample testing was being done.

I think this is what the velociraptors could have looked like.

Nope. What you're seeing is just my adaptation of an animal from a science-fiction movie. This is not a real Velociraptor (mind you, I even wrote this word in quotation marks in the work description). The real animal was like rather a strange tailed bird, like all its relatives.

Interesting that you gave it a lizard like head with the lips.

It looks like it came out from a paleoart book by Bakker himself! It resembles a lot the artstyle of the original illustation of Deinonychus, good job!

I am very glad that this is another comparison of my drawings with the art of Robert Bakker.   Although he is not an artist, but a paleontologist, his works are a true inspiration for me.

Your gallery speaks for you. There are a lot of “Shrink-wrapped” artworks that follow intelligently the canons of  paleoart of those days. Also your more “up to date” dinosaurs are very cool too!
