The Hand of Thrawn was the vast fortress on the planet of Nirauan, which served as the capital for the Empire of the Hand. Its name was due to its five towers, which vaguely resembled an outstretched hand.

It was chosen by Grand Admiral Thrawn as the center of his efforts in the Unknown Regions to conquer territory for the Galactic Empire and defend it from threats from the galactic fringes or from outside the galaxy. It contained a fully equipped command center, library, and a cloning facility in which Thrawn had kept a clone of himself in stasis. The complex also held an advanced database. It also had a holomap of the galaxy to show sectors that were underneath Thrawn's control.

The Fortress sported at least four turbolaser batteries mounted atop the centers of each undamaged tower and sixteen laser cannon batteries, four per tower. The Hand had a hangar bay equipped with one hundred Clawcraft starfighters Six shield generators installed in the depths of the fortress provided both ray and particle protection from attack. A garrision of Chiss Phalanx soldiers and Imperial troops manned and patrolled the fortress. In addition to these formidable modern defenses, the stone the Fortress was made was strongly implied to be able to absorb energy weapon attacks from anything short of a superlaser making the Hand of Thrawn, nigh impregnable to conventional attack when operating at full capacity.

By 19 ABY, it had become the leading fortress of the Empire of the Hand. When Mara Jade disappeared on a mission to track down the source of clones and mysterious starfighters which had recently become active, Luke Skywalker and R2-D2 followed her. Joining with some of the native Qom Jha and Qom Qae, they infiltrated the compound. Its garrison, comprised for the most part of Chiss troops, was commanded by Imperial Admiral Voss Parck. Baron Soontir Fel was also revealed as part of the Hand of Thrawn's complement, the leader of the Starfighter Corps for the Hand. Under the promise of Thrawn to return within ten years of his reported death, the leaders of the Empire of the Hand, had been partly fooled by an imposter named Flim masquerading as Thrawn in the known galaxy in an unrelated plot and decided to make contact with 'Thrawn' to turn over the roughly 250 Sectors worth of resources they had secured over their time in the Unknown Regions. Rather than kill Luke and Mara, Parck and Fel tried to convince Mara to join them and focused on capturing the pair when negotiations broke down. In order to prevent the Hand of Thrawn from turning itself over to Bastion and the Empire, Mara Jade used a beckon call to drive her ship, Jade's Fire, into the compound, damaging the main hangar wiping out the tightly packed starfighters there. Luke and Mara then reentered the compound through a hidden cave, where they discovered Thrawn's secret cloning chamber and a master computer for the facility hidden deep underground. Unintentionally springing the failsafe traps meant to protect the clone, the two Jedi ended up fighting a pair of droids designed to counter even Force users. While battling two sentry droids, Mara and Luke damaged a main support wall that was holding back an underground lake and the entire chamber flooded, but they were able to escape by forcing Thrawn's cloning cylinder to explode, resulting in the water draining and allowing them to escape. This tactic had the unintended side effect of crippling the Hand of Thrawn's power generation, shutting down its shields and weapon emplacements until they could be repaired. After escaping, Luke discovered that R2-D2 also managed to download an unaltered copy of the Caamas Document.

Following Luke Skywalker and Mara Jade's intervention, the Hand of Thrawn was attacked and looted by the Cavrilhu Pirates who were involved in some skirmishes with the Jedi and had followed them to Nirauan. Due to the destruction of their defenses by the Jedi, the personnel of the base were forced to evacuate. Fearing that the pirates could have obtained information about the secret Chiss installations in the ruins, Commander Stent went to the Syndic Mitth'raw'nuruodo training academy in the Rata Nebula to prevent a follow up pirate attack.

The fortress was eventually freed of pirate control in a concerted counter attack, then extensively repaired and renovated back into service. In 22 ABY, Luke Skywalker and Mara Jade traveled once again to Nirauan after being contacted by Parck from the Hand of Thrawn. The pair declined landing after the last interaction there, but did accept a mission to find Outbound Flight that the Empire of the Hand was assisting in.
