They are actually leaves. The tree is a robinia. The leaves turn from bright green to golden yellow in autumn.
(I've just been taking photos of some autumn trees in my front garden)

whether tis nobler in the mind to peck people's eyes out.... wait....
does he pose with skulls and mourn poor yoric?
awesome photo. thought it was a kingfisher at first, they've both got the big beaks and fluffy heads.

Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The loss of a tasty lizard,
Or to take arms against some worms I see,
And by opposing end them? To die: to sleep;
To fly away no more.
Kookaburras are part of the kingfisher family, so you were right.

Have you heard a kookaburra laugh? If you haven't, do a YouTube search for "laughing Kookaburra". They're hilarious.

I love the photo. I think the kookaburra is now one of my favorite birds... or is it the owl in the other photo... kookaburra or owl...kookaburra or owl...
by the way, has the kookaburra made up his mind already?

He stayed in the tree posing for me for over 10 minutes, then he flew off.
Maybe you could cross breed an owl and a kookaburra? You'd probably end up with a flatfaced wise looking bird with a long beak that laughs at you!

hahaha... that would be hilarious!
Speaking of hilarious, you mentioned in your other comment about a laughing kookaburra. I looked it up at youtube and you were right! I downloaded it and I plan to make it my alarm tone. Wow! A kookaburra to wake me up each morning

The sound they make is certainly different. However, when you get a few of them together, the noise level is extemely high. It gets very annoying after a while! I have had a pair (mates) in my backyard and it is almost deafening. However, the kookaburras are quiet compared to sulpher crested cockatoos! Here's a picture of one from my gallery [link] They are the noisiest bird I have ever heard. Their screeching can be heard for miles.

hahaha... when you said that the cockatoos' screeching can be heard for miles i decided against making it my alarm or ringtone. The whole town will awaken and I might find myself surrounded by an angry mob (with torches and pitchforks even) when i get out of the house.
