Working at the Superstar Daycare CH 12Chapter 12: A Little Break Okay, what do I do now? I thought to myself as I walked away. I could look around the place more... But if I was honest with myself. After that little exchange. I wanted to continue my transformation into a turtle. Just go home for a bit. Hide and come back after some dinner. I slowly made my way to the front entrance. I had to stop several times to accommodate people who refused to move out of the way. Their conversation was just too important to step away from traffic I supposed. Instead of asking them to move I simply waited until they eventually meandered down the path. After some more tests of my patience, I made it inside my car. I removed the music from my ears. I could hear a few voices outside of my vehicle. But they were far enough away to zone out. Nice and quiet. Much better. I let out an exaggerated sigh. It had only been 4 hours of work. My body wasn't aching yet. Not even close. But my brain was fried. After all those embarrassingly awkward interactions, how could it not? That's not even mentioning the moments when I was scared half to death. That situation was resolved. At least that's what I told myself. It felt like that was a week ago. That was how far over it my mind was. I actually preferred going back to that more than talking to anyone else right then. “Yeah,” I mumbled, “Home sounds good...” I turned on the radio and looked up the way home on my phone. Driving away so early felt a bit... scandalous? That's probably not the right word. It felt like I was getting away with something. But no. I was supposed to have this break now. Everyday. Wow. That just set in. I could go home for a couple hours every day. Do anything I wanted really. That was so cool! I made it home soon after. And I only had to stop at a parking lot to change directions twice! An accomplishment for me. A quiet little apartment opened its familiar embrace to me. Or it would have been quiet if not for the noise from my roommate. “Prrau~ Prrrau~!” Was how he said hello. “Hi, baby~” The pitch of my voice raised, “Did you miss me, Aspen?” A giant of a cat weaved between my legs, “Hey, buddy, I gotta put my shoes away~” Aspen merely meowed in response and continued getting in the way of my feet. This cat was all muscle. He could handle a shoe or two, but I still didn't want to kick him. He was my fur baby after all. Eventually, the furry gates parted and my footwear where free to go into their homes. , I plopped my bag on the couch and sat beside it. Aspen wasn't far behind. His weight made the cushions shift. Large cat paws pushed my lap down to claim his favorite bed. He rubbed his face against my hand. I could feel his purring through my palm. Sweet boy... I grabbed the cat brush off of the coffee table and began to pamper my pet. Aspen wasn't big just because of his brawn. He also had lots of thick fluffy fur. I knew the moment I met him that such a majestic mane would need lots of care. So we've made brushing a part of the coming home routine. He gets lots of attention and I get some relaxing time. Win-win. “I'm just back for an hour or two,” I explained to him, “But it doesn't hurt to brush twice. With summer coming you have so much hair to shed. Isn't that right?” “Prrr. Prrau!” Aspen approved. “It was a busy day today. I started my new job and I met a lot of new people,” My pet stopped purring to sniff my clothes more closely, “You can smell them, huh? One of them is a robot, you know. Isn't that cool?” It was only then that I realized that I never took my apron off. Oops... I'll have to use the lint roller on it later. Aspen concluded his inspection and began to make biscuits on my pant leg. “Turns out I was supposed to do nap by myself again...” “Meow!” “I know, it's terrible...” The large fur ball flipped himself over for me. I began to brush the other half of him, “But luckily nap time was really easy today.” “Prrrr,” Aspen began another batch of biscuits on my other leg. “Mr. Moon said that Mr. Sun gave out those sleepy candies. And they really worked wonders. Haha~” I stopped to think more about that. Was it okay to essentially drug the kids into sleeping? What was in those candies anyway? They had to get permission for that, right? Yeah, like getting permission to use the school sunscreen. Parents sign up for it when they start. That had to be it... “Oh wait,” I continued my one-sided conversation, “I never did thank Mr. Sun for that...” Despite my reservations about it. It was done to help me. And it did make my first day less stressful. Would it be weird to thank an animatronic for just doing its job? What it's programmed for? Aspen jumped off of my lap with a loud thud. Our salon session was over, but he knew what was next. Playtime. I got out his newest cat wand and started the hunting game. While my body handled the game on autopilot my mind continued. Well... People say thank you to their smart speakers all the time. And those were arguably less.. conscious than the Fazbear animatronics. And I bet the kids give them things all the time. There were pictures hung up on the walls at work. So I wouldn't be the first... Huh, it seems I've already decided to draw a picture. Why is that my only gift idea? Ever? Welp, it works for this so I'll go with it. Once Aspen caught his prey and was thoroughly satisfied I put the toy away. Man, he really went to town on this thing. There was only one feeble feather dangling limply off the end of the string. Guess I'll have to make him a new lobber out of yarn until I get paid again. My autopilot continued its way to the fridge to get out today's meal. “Hold on...” I stopped with my hand on the handle, “It's not six yet... It's too early to give you this.” “Mau! Prrau!” Aspen pleaded for me to reconsider. He rubbed my ankles and pawed at the fridge door. “You're right I always give you food after play time. But I forgot I got home really early today...” I mulled it over, “How about I give you a treat instead? For being such a good sport!” Something small to satisfy him before the real meal time. If I didn't keep at least that consistent then his sleep schedule would be all out of wack. Might have to do another play session before I leave, but that's okay. Aspen deserved it. I placed the treat in the bed facing the window. I snuck an extra one in there, just because. My feline friend chomped down his reward and snuggled up into his bed. I never had the heart to tell him that the bed was actually a dog bed. His fluffy mass flopped over the sides as he settled down to watch the bird feeder outside. All of the cat beds I found would have been too small for my boy. It wasn't a bed for large dogs, but still. It was an Aspen bed, and that is all that mattered to him. With my roommate thoroughly distracted, I spent the rest of my break making that thank you gift... Once I finished, it was time to head back. I gave Aspen his meal after a very fast game of tag with a yarn ball. Then I was off to work yet again. Coming back home every day just to return to work for a little bit may not have been the most gas efficient. If I had to change when meal time was it would be better late than early. So if money was tight I could just have my break at work. But that was future talk. Right now I had to find my way back again. I managed to make it back before 7 o'clock. It would take a few dozen more trips before I could confidently make it there and back without getting lost. Luckily Sun said that the time I come back was flexible. So it was fine. I hoped Nico wasn't waiting for me, though. I hate making people wait on me... So perhaps it was my rush that caused the collision. “HEY! Watch yourself!” The voice was... above me? I had fallen over. When did that happen? I'm not usually the one to be knocked down. My mass alone would usually stabilize me in situations like this. I stumbled my way back to standing. “I'm okay,” I replied automatically. Although, my rear did hurt quite a bit. “I didn't ask...” The blunt and rather rude reply had me dumbfounded. My eyes analyzed the offender. It was a woman. No taller than Cassandra. Her face hosted an irritable scowl. Her uniform gave her an air of authority. A white button-up and dark pants. Her cap spelled out 'SECURITY'... I remembered her. She was the one I talked to last week. The one who was disheveled and exhausted. Her tone hadn't changed, but she looked more presentable at this moment. “S-sorry,” was the only thing I managed to say. The rude security member was about to walk away with nothing more than a huff when she paused. She swiveled on her heel and faced me again. She shook her head before addressing me. “You're that new hire, right? With the daycare?” If I wasn't watching her this whole time I would have confused her for an entirely different person. Her face held a different aura than before. Lighter, more approachable. “I'm Vanessa. The night guard around here.” What? Was she trying to save face or something? I was even closer to the edge of a social breakdown now. Or was she just afraid of me telling on her? Any normal person would have reported being treated like that. If it persisted, that is. “Oh... uh--” I shifted my weight to accommodate my sore side, “I'm Nae-nae. I do naps, I guess...” I analyzed a poster on the wall to keep my eyes off the ground. I was one of Freddy. His face joyfully welcoming you into the Pizzaplex. Great... Now I'll think about being knocked over whenever I see that... “Oh right, they were replacing Moon,” Vanessa placed her hands on her utility belt, “I forgot about that for a bit there. That's fine, it's better at helping with patrols anyway...” “Yeah,” I hadn't fully listened to what she said. I wanted to walk away so badly. I stared at the glass doors behind the Security guard. “Hey,” Vanessa waved in front of me, “Since you've got naps covered, you think you could send the daycare attendant out early? I could get a lot more done that way.” I blanked. Dang it, what did she say? I could usually make it through with just nods and 'yeah's when someone was just talking at me. When I was done listening. But now she wanted an in-context answer. I didn't want to talk to her anymore. My body was screaming at me to run away. My conscience wouldn't allow that. Even though this interaction started very terribly, I was raised to be better than that. That's what I told myself. “S-sorry? I didn't hear what you said...” I subtly stepped closer to the doors. They parted to allow chatty patrons to pass then slowly close again. I wasn't close enough to set off the motion sensors yet. With nothing left to do, I faced Vanessa reluctantly. The sun had begun its plunge into the horizon. The bright light made my eyes squint. Thank goodness. Any excuse to look away from her was a blessing. “You don't need Moon anymore, right?” Vanessa favored her right foot as she leaned her hip to the side, “So you can send out that robot when you get there.” I wasn't even aware that Sun and Moon could leave. I never saw the daycare robot even attempt to step foot outside of the play area. Even when it would have been helpful. Like when we were walking the kids to another area or during meal times. Sun was always behind those heavy doors. Waiting for us to come back. “Is that allowed?” My voice came out shaky and nervous. “Duh, of course it is,” I couldn't make out Vanessa's face but I could hear the annoyance in her voice, “Moon patrols the Pizzaplex every night. It takes care of the intruders the staff bots can't.” “Takes care... of them?” I questioned. There was so much I didn't know yet, but that just sounded... off. Why would a childcare robot have anything to do with security? It would make more sense for it to protect. Not actively hunt down intruders. “Yeah, like, it detains them or whatever,” Her shadow shifted. My eyes escaped to their comfort zone at this opportunity. Vanessa continued, “It's way stronger than me. So it's safer, too.” Stronger? But she was able to withstand colliding with me with no problem. She couldn't be that weak... My imagination flashed a reminder of who she was talking about. Mr. Moon. I thought he could easily hurt me when glitching out. I stopped that visualization before thinking about what he could do with intent. “I-I-I don't know if I'm a-allowed to do... that...” continuing this conversation was getting harder by the second, “I j-just started – so uh – I can't... let him out-” “It's fine! It's fine!” Vanessa's voice became more strained, “Don't worry about it! It's whatever... Probably have to reprogram it to get that to work anyway... Sorry for asking you a dumb question.” “Oh... okay...” I shuffled my feet closer to the doors. They slowly slid open at my approach. “Yeah, you gotta get back to work, huh?” Vanessa adjusted her belt, “Go get those kids to sleep quickly, alright? The daycare attendant will leave once it confirms they are all sleeping.” I merely nodded and walked inside. Finally got away...
