Working at the Superstar Daycare CH 27Chapter 27: On Call “Maintenance did their job quickly, I see.” Miss Cassandra was quick to comment on Sun's newly repaired face. “I thought they wouldn't be in till tomorrow... or later.” She helped wake up the children by removing their blankets and gently jostling them. My older coworker made no attempt to quiet her voice. We were in the quiet comer, but it was wake-up time. An odd gray area when it came to the no-talking rule. One that I haven't gotten the green light from Moon about. He's left the area before Cassandra comes back from her break every day so far. So that meant that Sun and his shiny new parts were there to greet her when she returned. “Yeah,” I started in a whisper and gradually increased my volume, “Miss Mia was right about Mr. Sun not liking it. I had to stand by the curtains to keep him from hiding in here.” I put some bedding away and folded a few more, “At least Mr. Moon listened so they didn't repair him in the quiet corner.” “Moon came in... again?” Cassandra raised an eyebrow. “Yeah? He keeps me company while the kids-” I began almost matter-of-factly before hushing my tone when Cassandra shushed me. “Don't scare the little ones,” She prompted. I clammed up in both body and soul. Right, the kids would freak out if they heard Moon was there. All except for Suzie maybe. She might start making plans to stay up to see him. And I didn't think that was safe yet. I checked the little ones on the cots. They were still fighting to stay asleep. Good. “Sorry,” I whispered. Cassandra placed her hands at the waistband of her skirt and shook her head, “If it causes any trouble, you can tell it to leave. It won't come in if you give that command.” “No, no,” I attempted a smile, “It's okay, I'm fine with it.” “You are sure?” Cassandra gave me a look. “Remember yesterday?” We both paused. Both our task of waking the children and our conversation. A puff of nerves escaped my nose. I do remember yesterday. But not because of the situation she was talking about. I swallowed down the memory and tried to move on. “I asked him to wait till the kids are sleeping to come in from now on,” I spattered out, “S-so, that's all good now.” The shakiness of my voice didn't sound convincing. And Cassandra's face confirmed that fact. “You are new,” she patted my shoulder, “And wanting to impress. But it's okay to admit when you need help. It's how we learn and grow.” Her invitation to loosen my guard only made me raise up more walls. I stepped away with another attempt at a smile. “Don't worry, Miss Cassandra,” I picked up another blanket and continued our work, “I'm good.” I heard my senior puff out a small sigh, “Alright, dear. If you are sure.” At that, she dropped the subject and returned to rousing the children. I avoided eye contact with her for quite a while after that. One by one, the cots were relieved of their charges. The children were groggy and rubbing sleep out of their eyes. They shuffled up the ramp talking about what they dreamed about or what they wanted to do next. Miss Cassandra led most of them to the bathroom to wash up for snack and pick up. I was stopped while holding open the curtain for Suzie. She was in the middle of telling me about her dream that had Mr. Moon playing music for her. My pocket made a faint buzz. I ignored it at first thinking it was another text that I could look at later. But the buzzing didn't stop. I was getting a phone call. Great... “Who is calling me?” I said almost dramatically, “Don't they know I'm at work?” Suzie's giggle was the sign that I got the reaction I wanted. We continued walking and I plucked my phone out. It was a number that I didn't recognize. Another spam call? “Oh! That is Mr. Nico's number!” Mr. Sun had snuck up behind us. Seemingly taking my rhetorical question literally. Which was lucky for Nico. I would have hung up on him if Sun didn't chime in. I don't usually answer phone calls from numbers I don't know. I was half tempted to just let it go to voicemail. Pretend that I was too busy pick up the phone... “Answer it! Answer it!” The robot chanted giddily. ...Well, now I had no choice. I swiped the screen to answer the call. “H-hello?” I cleared my throat after that shaky squeak of a greeting. Sun crouched in closer. The situation also had Suzie thoroughly invested. The two of them were not helping my nervous attempts to act normal on the phone. “Good afternoon. Is this Miss Nae-nae?” Nico's overly polite tone somehow made me feel worse. Like I had to match how put together he was. I knew I wasn't going to win that battle anytime soon. “Y-yup, uh- This is she.” Totally ruined it. “How are you doing today? Everything alright?” Nico's tone wavered just a hair. Which had me reeling at the possibilities of why. I forced that down with a twist of my wrist. “We're doing great today, Mr. Nico!” Sun mock yelled into the phone. The suddenness of it made me jump. Sun's newly polished face was so close that just the act of moving my mouth would make our cheeks touch. “Oh!” I heard shuffling on the other end. “Mr. Sun is with you I see.” “Y-yeah,” I started when Suzie attempted to pull my arm down to her. After a shake of my head, I sat down so she wouldn't be tempted again, “Sorry.” “No, uh, that's fine,” Nico replied with a slight crack in his voice, “I was going to message him after this anyway. But uh-” Upon hearing this Sun sat next to me and put his face close to mine again. At this point, I should just put it on speaker. But my brain was too flustered to think about that. Nico continued, “I wanted to apologize for leaving you yesterday. A-and thank you for covering for me.” “No proble-” “Are you feeling better now?” Sun interrupted. Rays swaying quizzically. Seeing them spin around again was reassuring. The rays being broken for so long helped me appreciate how natural their movements were now. The only thing that might ruin the illusion being an occasional clicking sound. I heard Nico respond to the question, however, Suzie had caught my attention too well for me to notice what was said. The little one had gotten comfortable in my lap. Sun was sitting close enough for her to attempt braiding his ribbons together. She was so content that I didn't have the heart to tell her to stop. Plus Sun had moved his hands to accommodate it so he must have noticed as well. “Miss Nae-nae?” The sound of my name from the phone brought me back to the conversation. “S-sorry,” I chuckled nervously, “I didn't hear what you said.” “Oh, sorry about that,” Nico wasn't too fussed about repeating himself. Which was a relief to me, “I am feeling better, but since it hasn't been 24 hours I'll have to come in late today.” “Do you need me to stay for you?” I adjusted the phone to accommodate the now odd angle my head was at. Suzie had finished braiding Sun's ribbons and started working on my hair. She even stood up to reach to the back of my head as she continued making more braids. , “Mr. Sun said that it should be fine with just him and Miss Cassandra,” Nico explained, “But I would appreciate it if you could stay nearby. In case something comes up.” “I can do that.” I did have that El Chip's coupon I could use. Gave me an excuse to look around the Pizzaplex a bit more, too. Aspen would be fine waiting today. “Thank you, Miss Nae-nae,” I heard a small gust on the other end. Nico's voice sounded relieved. “I'll see you a bit after six.” “Okay, see you. Bye,” I removed the phone from my face. There was a quiet 'bye' from the small speaker before I ended the call. I added Nico's number to my contacts. Two down. Two to go. Might be better to just ask Cassandra for hers now. “Alright, I've gotta get up.” Suzie wasn't finished with my hair but once I stood up she had no choice but to leave it. I did get a good yank at my hair while doing so. Her failed attempt to stop me. My scalp was not happy about all this hair pulling today. I didn't feel like making a big deal out of it, though. The three of us shuffled over to the restroom. Well, it was mainly Suzie who was making me shuffle with her lack of enthusiasm for the task. Sun happily jingled with each step he took. Which looked odd with his hands braided together. He looked like a prisoner. One that didn't have reality set in yet. “Sorry,” I greeted Cassandra who was scrutinizing the children's hand washing skills. “That was Mr. Nico on the phone. He said he'll be in late today. Mr. Sun said I can still go but I'll stay close in case you need help.” Miss Cassandra stepped out of the doorway to analyze the odd sight before her. A little girl riding on my feet and Mr. Sun tied up. A very encouraging omen... really. “That should be fine,” She instructed one child to scrub a part of their hand they missed then continued, “I would only need help with pick up before you leave.” “Yeah,” I had successfully delivered Suzie to a sink to wash her hands. Much to her displeasure. “I can do that. And uh-” I paused while confirming that I did not need to do hand-over-hand with the little one, “I can give you my number in case you need to call me.” “No worries, dear. I already have it.” Cassandra smiled warmly. Mr. Sun had caught the attention of the children who left the bathroom. Several of them jumping to pull at his ribbon braid. But Sun proved to be an obstacle too tall for them. “You do?” My eyebrows raised to tickle the bottom of my bangs. “Yes, the contact list was updated when you started,” Cassandra's glasses shifted ever so slightly when she crinkled her nose playfully. “Oh, I don't know where that is...” My nervous chuckle was drowned out by a child yelling. All of them were washed up and ready to go. Mr. Sun was subtly baiting them to the doors with the chance to grab his precious ribbons. Cassandra tsked “Jones didn't tell you much, did he?” “Not really,” I followed the migration of children and Cassandra kept pace. “You got the app at least?” She framed that with a mix of fact and curiosity in her tone. “There's an app???” My surprise made that louder than I wanted. I shrunk back. Cassandra said a phrase I couldn't understand and continued, “My Lord, child. Even the customers have the app.” “I'm sorry?” I exaggerated a shrug. I'm just a poor girl who's only been able to dream about coming to the Pizzaplex before now. I had no idea. We had reached the children who were a swarm of 'I need help' and 'I'm hungry'. Cassandra added, “I'll show you before you leave,” and went to work with the children. I helped out as well. Mr. Sun, on the other hand, was too busy protecting Suzie's braiding project to do much at all. He couldn't be planning on keeping it that way forever, right? Maybe just until Suzie is out of sight. At least I hope. After a bit of hustle and bustle, we made it out the door and up the stairs. There were parents already there waiting for us to arrive. Some looking more impatient than others. I tried to shake off the stares. With some success. Mostly because one parent had stepped forward to speak to us while the others merely took their children and left. “How did things go? I hope she wasn't upset the whole time,” He was the definition of nonthreatening. With soft eyes and a modest stature. I had to look down at him. Which only served to make me feel more abnormal for my height. Miss Cassandra was pleasant with him, using a casually polite tone, “No worries, Mr. Bezzle. She did have a cry, but Miss Nae-nae helped her calm down.” She punctuated that with a pat on my shoulder. I hunched down and looked away and back again. Cassandra, how could you do this to me? Don't praise me in front of other people. It's so embarrassing. “That is great to hear~” Mr. Bezzle's face lit up in delight at the news. Suzie poked her head out from behind me and giggled at her father. “Did you make a new friend Suz?” The little one burst out of her hiding spot fully to jump into her father's arms. “YEAH! She likes Mr. Moon!” “Does she now? That's wonderful.” I saw a hint of sadness at the corner of Mr. Bezzle's lips. He gave his daughter a big squeeze and addressed me, “Sorry for the trouble this morning. And thank you. Have a wonderful evening~” With that, he left. “Y-yeah, you, too,” I waved them off. Well, that was rather short and painless. A little too short. What else would he have said? I had no idea. Didn't Mia say that he works here? He didn't have a uniform on. Maybe that was just a bad guess but who knows. After the kids began their snack destruction Miss Cassandra got back to me. “I'll show you the app before you go, dear.”...
