Description
EDIT: I'm just gonna go for it and ask for crits on this...
Mainly the background - I think it looks kinda flat. And also the colouring of the muscles - I mean, I would like it if someone would give me any good techniques for doing that. Be brutal xD Thanks
Ugh sorry for the lame title
Ill make up for it with these floating rock and lanterns
I put more effort into the background than I usually do... did it pay off? :U
AND I used s tutorial to help me with the glowy stuff
Comments mean the world to me o3o

I know this is an older piece of art of yours, but I just want to ask a question: How do you make the lineart for your art on GIMP like this? Then how do you color it? The only way I can figure is that you use the pencil for lineart then the select tool for coloring. But the pencil makes the art look extremely pixelated and the lineart too sharp, like in most of my art. Thanks!!

Hrmmm. Well I'm not very good at explaining but...
Usually I have a canvas about 1000 x 1000 (depending on the shape etc), and I'm telling you this because it can affect how the line looks depending on the brush size.
And yah I use the paintbrush, not the pencil personally xD
The brush I use is 11, and normally 0.5 - 0.10 on the scale.
I havent used it for ages, so I cant remember exactly xD
Also, I know some people just draw the line with one stroke, but I find it comes out better if you kinda go over it a bit.
But thats just me, maybe I just make too much work for myself ahaha xD
For the colouring I used to do that all by hand, until I discovered the select tool like you said o.o
I hope that was sorta understandable/useful

Hi xlaurabevx,
This is ~jacij from #Critique-It This is a really interesting picture, it's got a magical air about it This pictures a little tricky as there's not a single light source, instead you've got multiple smaller ones. There's two ways you could potetially deal with this. One is to make a larger light source (such as a moon or similar). You don't need it in the picture itself, just know the direction and strength of the light from it. The other way is to just use the ones you have. You've done this really well with the light on the right, perhaps add in some lighting from the one on the left also.
With the muscles, you've got the outlines there, I think you need a bit more definition to make them stand out. Shadows can help with this. Grab some pictures of similar looking animals like greyhounds (such as this one here [link] ) or large cats (like panthers suggested by KibbleDiggit). Anatomy diagrams with the muscles outlined can also help to base your creature off. So yep, consider adding the shading in to show the underlying muscles along with the shadowing from the lights.
The background's good, could consider putting a bit of a gradient to the sky (lighter to darker) Also changing the colours a little on the rocks in the background, so say you might make the furtherest rock a little darker so show distance. Another way of doing this would be to allow some of the clouds you have there to wrap around between the rocks. You've got really good detail on the tops of the rocks, perhaps consider putting a bit more shading/shadows on the lower part of the rocks.
Hope this helps, this is just my oppinion so feel free to take anything useful and discard the rest. This is a nice original piece, I'm glad you submitted it to critique it

I tried to find a creature whose muscles might be a good reference, and my best guess was this picture of a panther: [link] Though panthers are mammals and your character looks like a reptile, so that reference might not even work for you at all.
Judging by that, it looks like the muscles would stand out if the darks were darker and the lights were lighter. Making the highlights brighter would also help the character stand out from the background while still maintaining the darkness of the picture. Having some lamplight glinting off of the necklace would also be really cool.
The lamps look really nice. I like how they glow, and how the light shines off of the character and everything else around it. The texture and detail of the pebbles is also pretty amazing.
Cool picture, great concept, wonderful detail!
