Description I absolutely adore Hamlet - in fact, for an assignment, I dressed up real cool and did the "to be or not to be" speech. Awesome costume. But for those less Shakespeare lovin', I present, Neko Presents Hamlet: Hamlet in a Nutshell.

I agree with
The Reduced Shakespeare Company performs all of Shakespeare's plays. They do Hamlet forward, backward, AND in 2 minutes! Entire play, too. You should love it!

do you think queen gertrude ever really did love hamlet couse i was doing a project on hamlet were i do a journal and i have to be queen gertrude and do the journal as her, so im like "she married king hamlet to just be queen of denmark and after king hamlet died of course she didnt care that he died so she married the brother to stay as queen of denmark." what do you think did she marry king hamlet to be queen and remarryed the brother to stay queen?

Well I really don't think there's enough evidence to point solidly in one direction or another. You could also make the argument that she married him for the sake of settling the royal family/head of state side of things right down, since the king's death would leave Denmark in a vulnerable state, especially with the kerfuffle with Fortinbras and co. going on. There's as many perspectives as there are readers, and I don't think any theory's less valid than the others.

Thanks! I think people get daunted by Shakespeare 'cause they think of it as school stuff and tough reading, but it's actually loads of fun! ^.^

actually, that was pretty good... a bit out of order, but you got most of the main points.

i'm doing hamlet in school now,,,does every character have some sort of split personality thingy?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

xlithiumflowerx In reply to Araic [2007-09-08 01:09:43 +0000 UTC]

It's actually my view that Ophelia is the only one with anything close to a split personality, being that she hides her true views of everyone in favour of pleasing those around her, and it's only when Hamlet's callousness finally breaks her that she's finally free to tell everyone precisely what she thinks of them in my personal favourite soliloque of the whole play, and even then it's coded using the meanings of the flowers within her borderline-ravings. (In my estimation, it's probably the single most misinterperated soliloque in all of Shakespeare.)

Of course, this is just my view, and part of the beauty in Shakespeare is that no one view is necessarily more correct than another, and there are infinite ways in which to interperate the texts. ^.^

we've just started the play and so far we've got...
Hamlet just being cold and then going suicidal, then going excitedly happy to see his friends (its like a pendulum)
then polonius who seemed a wise old guy until his dialogue with ophelia, where we find out he actually a sexist snastard (or something similar)
then C..(the new king, can't rember the name) seems like an ok king, but then he begins to lie (badly) and there is a 'hint' that he 'might' have killed old hamlet.
then there's gertrude whos went off with her husbands brother after being 'sooo' upset about his death.
And we'e just got to Act 1 scene4!!!!

(i know my spellings pretty bad but i spent today at a slaughter house (work exp.) so spelling isn't on my mind right now)

xlithiumflowerx In reply to Araic [2007-09-11 03:06:50 +0000 UTC]

Personally I find Hamlet's actions fairly consistant throughout the play if you can tap into his underlying motivations and realize that his emotions are stronger than his will which causes him to become what he pretends.
Polonius just cares more about appearances than his daughter.
Claudius (the king)... well, I won't spoil THAT for you. ^.^
And Gertrude is just weak. She's a typical classical weak female character under the influence of the men around her. In Shakespeare, the only decent female characters either dress as and pretend to be men, or die horrible, tragic deaths. (Depending on how you read King Lear, occassional both.) =/

No worries on your spelling, it's the content that matters, eh? *spent the day in Astronomy classes and is a little muddled as well*

It seems like a lot of people aren't willing to give Shakespeare a chance just because they think old play = boring play. It's a real shame, since there's a lot of really cool stuff going on in most of the plays! (By the way, a tip for reading Hamlet. Pay attention to every time someone mentions violets, and think about how it relates back to Ophelia.)
