Long shot I know, but large pointy ears and a fox like tail. If anything was to happen to tails I think it isn't out of the question. Like some sort of accident that caused him to loose a tail and being merged with the Phantom Ruby. Toss in some sort of time loop or paradox in there for good measure. (building off of the Theory that Mania and Forces are connected and that Infinite is powered by the Phantom Ruby)

But is he really a fox though. He might not be. Infinite could be someone who was trapped against their will. Somehow he might Tails before... I wouldn't know. But what you said would fit perfectly... though I don't know if Tails would become Infinite.
I don't believe that they will kill Tails off, Aaron accidentally said that Tails will die in Sonic Forces. Aaron would of been in trouble, but I don't think he would be. I wouldn't like them to kill him off.
