Weeks passed, and soon Sasori knew almost all the letters in the alphabet. Spelling and decent handwriting still eluded him, but he almost had the basics down.

“Danna, your S’s are crooked, un!” Deidara scolded, showing the Akasuna for the hundredth time how to properly form the letter.

“Quit naggin’ me, brat,” Sasori growled, fixing the letter for the hundredth time. He wished the blonde would quit whining about his writing; it was getting mighty annoying. “I wish you’d shut your yap for more ‘n five seconds…”

“Well I can’t help it if you ain’t got it in you to write good, un!” Deidara retorted, southern drawl coming out as his temper flared.

Sasori sighed and set the pencil down. “I’m takin’ a break.”

“Fine by me, un,” Deidara huffed, walking over to the stream to splash a little cool water on his face. The summer heat may have had something to do with his anger.

Sasori sat back under the oak tree and watched his partner cool himself in the stream. The blonde was now digging through the water and pulling out think muck. “Whatcha doin’?” he asked in a bored tone.

“Getting clay, un,” Deidara answered, letting the muck fall to the group with a plop as he reached down to pull out more.

“Well stop it. You need to wash off an’ eat,” Sasori ordered, holding up a thick slice of cornbread for the blonde to see. Deidara scooped out one more handful of the muck before washing off in the stream, walking over to his friend to sit and munch on the still-warm bread he was offered. “Thanks Sasori danna, un,” Deidara said, quickly finishing off the food.

“Deidara?”

“Hmm?”

“I’ve been thinkin’ about this readin’ and writin’. Well, I bring ya cornbread ever’day, but what’s in it for me?”

“Well, you’ll know how to read an’ write.”

“And?”

“Well, what else do you want?”

The red head thought for a minute, before a smirk crossed his face. “I got an idea. But I can’t tell ya.”

“What?!” Now the blonde had to know. “Please danna?” His eyes grew wide and sparkled. “Please ple-“

“Oh no,” Sasori interjected, covering the one cerulean eye with his hand and earning a squeak of protest from the sculptor. “If you hear it, you ain’t gonna go for it.”

“Am I gonna hafta cut my hair, un?” Deidara asked, pulling away and giving the puppet master a fearful look.

“Nope. But I ain’t tellin’ ya anymore ‘n that.”

“Danna’s being mean, un,” Deidara pouted, crossing his arms in a gesture of annoyance.

“Just hurry an’ teach me so’s you can find out, brat,” Sasori commanded, the smirk still on his face.

“You’ve got it, un!” Deidara cried joyfully, holding up Sasori’s paper proudly. “All the letters an’ some words, an’ you can make sentences an’ everything, un!”

Sasori merely smiled and stretched. “No school this year. Sweet.”

“I can start bringing books to read, an’-“

“Deidara.” The blonde stopped and looked down at his seated friend. “Do you remember the deal we made? That I’d get somethin’ when I learned all this?”

“Yeah, un.”

“Well I want it now.”

“Danna,” Deidara asked, sitting down close to his friend, “What do ya want anyway, un?”

“This,” Sasori answered, leaning in and giving Deidara a kiss.

The blonde froze, not moving even when the red head pulled away. His lower lip began to tremble, and his eyes got teary. “Deidara? Dang, if I knew this was gonna-“

“You thief, un! You’re worse ‘n a weasel in a chicken coop, un!” Deidara said, crying. “That was my first kiss, un!”

Sasori raised a brow. “Seriously?”

“Yeah, un!”

“Well sorry, I just wanted a kiss, ya brat.” This made Deidara whimper again, and against his better judgment, Sasori hugged the blonde teen to his chest. “Calm down. You’re bawling worse ‘n my cousin Mary Lou when she broke her arm.”

Deidara calmed down enough to glare up at the red head. “That was a cruel trick, danna.”

“So? I really did want a kiss, so ever’thing’s fine.”

“Alright…” Deidara gently pushed up and kissed the red head softly on the lips. This time, he smiled. “Ya know, this don’t feel all that bad.”

“How so?” Sasori asked, sitting back against their maple tree with Deidara still in his arms.

“Kinda like a warm feeling, like right after you take a bath-“ both boys started. “IT’S BATH DAY!” They cried, leaping to their feet, giving each other a quick goodbye before running off to their houses.

“OWW! Ma, don’t scrub so hard, un!” Deidara hissed, wondering how his hair was staying attached to his skull. Ordinarily he bathed alone, but before major holidays and the start of the school year, his ma would grab hold of him and scrub his hair, which in her opinion never got clean enough of Deidara washed it himself.

“Quit your howling, you soun’ like a cat that just got its tail run over, un!” his mother commanded, scrubbing harder. “School starts tomorrow, and you’re gonna have clean hair if it kills me.”

“Or just Dei,” Amos called out, sticking his head in the doorway.

“You ain’t getting’ off the hook Amos! You’re turn’s next, un.” The elder brother paled and Deidara chuckled. “I wonder how danna’s doing…”

“Lee, quit dunkin’ Billy! Bob, quit pretendin’ to drown!” Sasori hollered, grabbing Tom. “Oh no, you’re getting’ bathed if it kills me!”

“I don’t wanna!” Tom protested, trying to twist out of his cousin’s grasp.

“Too bad,” Sasori said, tossing the boy into the washtub. “Ya’ll stink worse ‘n road kill that Uncle Mel forgot to scrape off the road in time to cook!”

“’Sori, Billy’s splashin’ me!” Lee whined, while Bob tried to climb out the side of the tub.

“Quit it!” the Akasuna ordered, shoving Bob back in. The door suddenly burst open to reveal a very naked Jenny. “I don’t wanna bath!” she yelled as Sasori scooped her up, wrapping his shirt around the girl. He walked down the hall with her in his arms, stopping outside the female’s washroom, knocking and holding her at arm’s length.

“I think this is yours,” he said to Aunt Lily, handing the girl over and turning in time to see Billy and Lee running down the hall. In only a matter of seconds the boys were caught, being carried back into the bathroom by their cousin. “You ain’t gettin’ outta bathin’,” Sasori said bluntly, grateful to see that Bob and Tom were still in the tub. He suddenly slipped on a puddle of water, sending all three into the tub.

“’Sori, ma said you’d get your bath after us!” Billy stated plainly.

“There’s been a change o’ plans,” Sasori growled, twisting to sit in the bottom of the washtub. This actually made it easier to hold onto his four squirming cousins, all thought he was much more likely to fall victim to soap bubbles and water fights. “I hate bath day,” the red head muttered as Billy climbed onto his shoulder’s to escape Lee’s wrath, while Bob and Tom seemed to be occupied in finding out how many soap bubbles you could get out of one bar of soap.
