Description
"You can't find the killer."Aly ground his teeth together, trying not to let his frustration show as he nodded. To admit it... to have to turn to outsiders to avenge Grey... it was maddening. Andre watched him for a moment, looking (Aly knew) for any indication of his current emotions, then looked away with a sigh.
"Come on, I need a drink," she said, taking her toothpick from between her teeth. There was no sympathy in her brisk tone, no pity in her artificial glance, but that was the right response. One did not look at any Masihr like that, much less The Wolf.
Andre opened the back door, nodded him inside. She was, technically, one of the bouncers, but it wasn't for her backstreet access that Aly had come to her.
"So," she said after they had sat down and she had gotten the bartender to give them glasses. "What do you need?"
"Your expertise," Aly replied, draining his glass without tasting any of it. "We... can't find anything on him, on Grid or off. It's like he doesn't exist."
Andre hmmed to herself. Then she followed Aly's lead and threw back her head, draining her tumbler. "Right," she said, again in that brisk, business-like tone. "Then give me whatever it is you have. Bob, seconds."
Aly waved away the bartender when he tried to refill his glass, and at Andre's quizzical look he explained, "One glass, it's the rules."
Andre shrugged. "Dumb rule." After a long drink, she set down her glass and turned back to Aly seriously. "This one is for free, Aly. I liked Grey, he was a good kid. Give me free reign, and I will find the murdering scum who did this, alright? But I do have a condition."
"We don't like conditions, Andre."
"I know, but this one I insist on." For artificial eyes, Aly saw a strange amount of passion in Andre's at that moment. "When I find him, you aren't allowed to kill him. Not until Boss has given you the order."
Aly scowled, his hand tightening around his empty glass. "That's a stupid condition. When we find this guy, whoever finds him, he is dead."
"Yeah, I know, but my condition stands." She raised a hand when Aly began to protest. "You're not going to threaten me, I'm too valuable, and you have no one else to go to. I'm the best there is. So, either you accept my terms and your family gets your revenge, or you keep trying to find this man on your own, and he vanishes. The fact is, if I presented your father with those options, he'd accept my conditions in a heartbeat. So why are you hesitating?"

This is another of those Cyberworld things I've had "almost done" for ages. Might just be the last one, though, so that's good. ^^ Anyway, introducing Andre, the cyborg repairwoman and tracker. Cyberworld needed more ladies, and she was one of the few I thought up who actually seemed like a character who could add to the world.

More ANGST! Somebody's got to find this murderer fellow and give him what-for... But I do like Andre quite a bit. A note about your writing style: I am in love with the way you drop details in-prose, e.g. Andre's artificial eyes. Your writing would be a prime example my college advisor would have used for 'show, don't tell.' So kudos on that!

Cyberworld is just full of angst, isn't it? >:} But heh-heheh... evil laughs. Be careful what you wish for, Azeddy...
*Yay!* "Show, don't Tell" was the earliest writing principle I ever heard of, back when I attended that first writing lecture because Burlew was going to. Unfortunately, though, embracing that teaching has led to barely any of my characters having written descriptions! If I can sneak hair color and a few details in, they're lucky.
Thank you, though. Getting the tiny, important details in without breaking immersion is one of my biggest goals, so these comments are all excellent ones!
