This is lovely, especially for your first time using scratch board. You've done so well at capturing the shadows and highlights and it really makes this piece sharp. I've seen a lot of first attempts (like mine, hehe) where everything is overscratched and tends to be in the mid-range. Great work!

I have some experience in creating lighting like this, where I'm building from the black, but not by scratching.
I have however done something similar to the scratching technique too, where I would draw something with white board marker, and go in with a mechanical pencil and use the fine point to scratch out highlights.
I guess it's a combination of the two.

Actually, it was only 6 hours, which isn't much compared to most of my other pictures, thanks though.
