Description
Here you can see how I draw my gel pen sketches. First step is to create a rough guideline of shapes and shadows on a simple sheet of copy paper in the same size as the final version will be. This is important so that I get the proportions right and be sure the composition will work nicely.

Then I place the completed rough under my high quality paper and it shows through just as much that I can still see the lines, a lot like an onion layer in animation or a low opacity layer in a digital art program. Then I draw using these guides the most important lines and shadows first, then proceed to render the image as a whole, adding layers of hatching to create depth and texture.
