They're a sub-type of 'human in equestria' type of mlp fanfics on fimfiction.net.
Basically, to sum up what started the category, a guy goes in costume to a convention. Ends up buying a perfect prop to go with the costume to complete it from a shady merchant. Next thing they know, they're in one of several timelines of Equestria, turned into the character they were dressed as, and the fandom that they're from, in one way or another, is 'leaking' into that Equestria, influencing and changing it as Equestria adapts to the changes occurring in their world. And later, the Displaced learns to make a token to send into the void between realities, where it multiplies and carries itself and a message for other Displaced to find. Said token then can be used to summon the Displaced to aid one another in their separate timelines.
