Chapter Three

The next day you were pretty enthusiastic about coming to school. You certainly weren’t scared of the freshman beat down anymore, considering the fact that Dave had beat them up for you. Even though you didn’t expect Dave to protect you forever, you at least knew the seniors were actually capable of being hurt just as much as you were. You thought they were some kind of invincible being.

Karkat, of course, had scolded you the entire way home about even interacting with Dave Strider… well that, and the ‘bright red panties’ remark. You wished Karkat could laugh about stuff once in a while with you.

“If I see you talking to him today, so help me gog I will rip both of your heads off and screw them on backwards!” Karkat cried at you before you had left him in the morning. In 2nd period, however, you figured you could just forget what he said and talk to Dave anyways. You had noticed him sitting with John the day before and figured he was just a new student.

As you walked into your 2nd period class – which happened to be math – you saw John and Dave sitting together. You walked over to their table.

“Hey John, hey Dave,” You said happily, waving slightly and leaning on the table.
John looked up from the two’s quiet conversation. “Oh, hi [Name]!” Dave merely nodded at you.

You smiled and turned so you were just facing Dave. “I just wanted to say thanks again for helping me out yesterday.”

Dave shrugged, “Like I said, it’s no problem.” Before you could say anything else, he arose from his chair and walked up to the teacher’s desk. You sat down in his seat while he was gone.

John had a confused look on his face. “What did Dave do for you yesterday?”

“I almost got beaten to a pulp by some seniors,” You answered him, “but Dave beat them up.” Then, you laughed, remembering that John probably set Dave up to do this. “Don’t pretend you don’t know.”

He blinked, “Um… I didn’t know that Dave beat those seniors up for you.”

“Why would he help me if you didn’t tell him to?” You asked.
John didn’t have time to answer; Dave towered over you, staring at you through his shades, obviously waiting for you to give his chair back. You quickly got up and ran to your seat before the bell rang and class started up.

The rest of the morning periods were dreary. You hadn’t bothered to talk to anyone during the other periods, considering the fact that none of your friends were in 3rd-5th period with you. You were yet again just excited to get to lunch and stop listening to boring teachers.

You clutched the handle of your lunchbox as you walked into the lunchroom. You scoped the room again, looking for people to sit with. You saw Karkat, but you didn’t really want to sit with him. You could sit with Feferi, but you always felt awkward around her and her friends. They were in such a higher blood class then you, and according to Karkat, even if you were a [b/c] blood, you still weren’t high enough to be a high blood. He explained perfectly well that no one was as high in blood color as Feferi.

Suddenly, a voice interrupted your thoughts.

“[Name]! [Name]! [Name]! [Name]!” John cried from across the room, “Come sit with us!”
You looked over to see Dave and John staring at you intently, just waiting for you to come sit down, so you did.

John was extremely happy about you sitting across for them. You couldn’t really tell what Dave was thinking. Those damn shades hid all of the emotion from his face.

“So, how has your day been so far, [Name]?” John asked.
You shrugged. “Meh, it’s been shit so far. Nothing has really happened?”
Dave turned his head to look at you. “No seniors were giving you trouble today, right?”
You were surprised he even said anything, let alone asked if you were doing okay. You nodded. “Yeah, they haven’t bothered me any.”

“Good,” He replied simply. You could see the slight smirk on his face. You figured he was probably thinking about what a good job he’d done the day before, beating them up and whatnot.

The three of you had a nice conversation about how classes were so far, what teachers you loved or hated and other stuff like that. You actually thought it was pretty fun since you didn’t talk to John much and you didn’t know anything about Dave.

You actually thought Dave was kind of cool. Then again, didn’t everyone think Dave was cool in the first place?

After lunch was over, you walked to your locker to pick up your things. Of course, Karkat was waiting for you there. Oh great, I’m gonna get scolded again… you thought to yourself.

“I saw you sitting with those maggots,” Karkat growled, “even though I specifically told you not to interact with that fucking Strider kid!” He went off, raging way too much for his own good.

“Why does it matter?” You asked, “All I did was sit with them. It’s not like I made out with him in the bathroom during lunch for pete sakes!”

Karkat’s eye twitched. “You… did… WHAT?!” He raged even louder now which attracted lots of attention in the hallway. He was screaming about how you were completely irresponsible you were to be doing things like that.

You sighed and looked at your feet. You hated being yelled at by your brother, especially when he was embarrassing you in front of the people you knew, and he was definitely doing that. Practically the whole school had made a circle around you two. Most of the kids were laughing and you just couldn’t take it anymore.

You burst into tears and pushed through the circle of people, running off in you-didn’t-even-know-what direction. You didn’t know if Karkat had followed, but you really didn’t care at the moment. You could usually be nice about his scolding and make a joke, but you were tired of him bullying you. Even if he was older than you, it didn’t mean that he could turn into your mom.

Your mom… you really did miss her, and maybe he did too…

Your thoughts were interrupted when you ran into something and fell backward onto the ground.

You opened your eyes to see three seniors – more specifically, the ones Dave had saved your ass from yesterday.

“I think we have something to settle, bitch…” One of the boys said in an obviously angry voice. You stared up at them, your eyes red from crying. You couldn’t bring yourself to tell them off or even get up off the ground.

“Dammit all…” You whispered under your breath. That’s when another one of the boys picked you up by the scruff of your shirt.

“You’re not getting away from us this time, pipsqueak.”
