Description
Come out moonCome out wishing star
Come out
Come out
Wherever you are
I’m out here in the dark
All alone and wide awake
Come and find me
I’m empty and I’m cold
And my heart's about to break
Come and find me
I need you to come here and find me
Cause without you I’m totally lost
I've hung a wish on every star
It hasn’t done much good so far
I can only dream of you
Wherever you are
I’ll hear you laugh
I’ll see you smile
I’ll be with you just for a while
But when the morning comes
And the sun begins to rise
I will lose you
Because it’s just a dream
When I open up my eyes
I will lose you
I use to believe in forever
But forever is too good to be true
I've hung a wish on every star
It hasn’t done much good so far
I don’t know what else to do
Except to try to dream of you
And wonder if you are dreaming too
Wherever you are
Wherever you are
-Wherever You Are from Pooh's Grand Adventure: The Search for Christopher Robin
I've been wanting to remake this picture from 2014 for awhile, and I'm glad I finally got around to it. And now there's the added benefit of being able to test some of the new elements I'm introducing to Grim's design. The glasses, whisker dots, and tufted ears are all new things that haven't even been added to his reference sheet yet, but I've been playing around with them in my sketchbook and trying to determine if I wanted to keep them, but now I'm satisfied that this is where I want to go with his design.
For a bit of context, Grim, whose real name is Ridley Thomas Avery, was born to Anna, the teenage daughter of Xavier and Evelyn Avery, the founding family of Averyton. Well, in this universe (a sort of Victorian/Steampunk world where wolves are a stand-in for humans because I like drawing them more) albinos like him are considered bad fortune and the reflection of some sin the family has committed. In Grim/Ridley's case, they believe it's because he was conceived out of wedlock with a lower class man who then preceded to abandon Grim's mother for another woman. They hid him away in the attic of their house for the first few years of his life, never allowing anyone to know that something so shameful had occurred. Only when he became older and more restless did they (and by they I mean Xavier) decide he was too much of a liability. Ridley's mother and grandfather (by this point his grandmother had passed away) then took the pup out into the woods and abandoned him to starve to death in order to save their family's reputation. However, the pup miraculously survived, and years later would return to finally seek vengeance on the family who left him to die. In this picture Ridley, now hungry, scared, and alone, wishes desperately for his mother to come back for him. Still a young pup with very little knowledge of the outside world, Ridley doesn't yet believe that his mother truly abandoned him, and is convinced that eventually she'll return.
Grim's story is so full of cheer and sunshine, it's a wonder he's not happier. Anyway, in this picture little Grim (aka Ridley) is supposed to be about eight, and jeez do I have a hard time drawing pups. There are so many small things that make a character look like a child, and it's not as simple as just shrinking them down. I do think it's a big improvement on the original, though.
