BL2 was an inspiration. In this case the device can be activated at will though, not when you run out of bullets and reload.

You can also just press the reload button and you will still discard the weapon. The damage is even greater when you "reload" prematurely.

Thanks! I might have to revise the concept a bit. Someone pointed out the short comings of one of its features. I guess the finger scanning thing was cool, but maybe not as practical in combat. :\

Maybe fingerless gloves?
I see what you mean though. I guess that might be an issue if your fingers get disfigured in combat or something. Maybe the button has to be pressed down for a few seconds, and then have the lever pushed to activate the detonation sequence.

It'd also be an issue if you don't like exposing yer fingers to war
Another option since this looks pretty far future, is IFF tags identifying the user built into some other piece of gear or implanted in their hand

You mean like the RFID chips? I can see a problem where the enemy knows about the chip. They can kill a soldier, ID him/her, and then track his/her family.
I'll just have the button turn on after being held down for a few seconds. The soldier can always deactivate it. The only way the timer starts is when the back lever is pushed in. This multi-stage system prevents the timer from accidentally starting, and it has an alert in case something happens so the soldier has time to respond.

Well, that wouldn't be a problem unless they win and take over the territory said people live in and all the databases regarding it, at which point they'd already have that information~

Pretty awesome. One question though, does it need to be empty to turn into a bomb? Also, if it's still loaded can it still shoot when armed?

It can be activated whenever, but it makes more sense to use the pistol as a grenade when you are out of ammo.
When you activate the grenade option, the gun locks so that when you throw it and spins. There won't be an accidental misfire if the barrel points towards you as it spins in the air and hits the ground.
