I like the sad expression and the facial coloring that differ from the original photograph. The face in the painting seems older and sadder because of differences in the eyebrows, facial coloring and shape that are not found in the photograph.
Somewhat off putting are the construction choices in the alignment of the mouth and eyes. The eyes are not parallel with the mouth. Similarly, the equators of the mouth and the eyes are not at right angles with the nose. The child's face in the photograph is beautifully symmetrical. There are people in real life whose faces are not symmetrical, so, perhaps this was an artistic choice to strengthen the mood of sadness.
