Description
It was a late winter night when the queen gave birth to the heir of the kingdom; two girls, twins, innocent-faced with no distinguishable difference other than their eyes and hair color. The firstborn, Felcia, had beautiful, clear blue eyes that reminded one of the heavens’ skies and wisps of curly blonde hair framed her lovely face. However, Invidia, the second born, had deeply contrasting green eyes that made some recall the long, rich grasses that was streaked throughout the Kingdom of Isis and tufts of raven black hair adorning the top of her head.As the years passed, the babies grew into children, the children grew into young girls, and the young girls grew into adults. Felcia and Invidia, though different in appearances, had much of the same likes, dislikes, and hobbies, though Invidia always excelled more so than Felcia at anything they did. For example, they both were musically inclined, favoring the harp as their instrument. Felcia played the harp beautifully, but none could compare to Invidia, who created music so beautiful they said it challenged that of the cherubs in the heavens.
They both had grown into beautiful women by the time they were adults. Felcia was tall and slender, with long, flowing, curly golden hair that rivaled the color of the most beautiful sunset over the clearest blue oceans. She had pale, porcelain skin that never tanned, no matter how long she stood in the sun, and her eyes only got clearer and bright as the days wore on.
Invidia, though, was a rare and exotic beauty. Long, straight black hair fell to the small of her back, and when the moonlight shown upon her, ringlets of light nestled themselves throughout her hair, making her look like the goddess of the night. Her green eyes shown like emeralds in the sun, and the one thing she shared in common with her sister in their appearance was that they both had pale, flawless skin. Because of her extraordinarily uncommon looks, Invidia was decided upon as the most beautiful in the kingdom, even more so than her stunningly gorgeous twin, Felcia.
Despite Felcia being in her sister’s shadow, she was the happiest, most content woman you could ever meet. She was joyous in all that she had been blessed with, and held nothing against her sister. Her soul was pure and full of light, her personality being friendly and well-liked.
Invidia, on the other hand, though, was mysterious and introverted. She kept to herself, despite how many residents of Isis tried to befriend or court her. Everyone thought that this was simply her personality differing from her sister like so many other things, but Invidia knew better.
When they were younger, Invidia had loved her sister Felcia, but as they grew into children and Felcia was given more privileges than her and, in Invidia’s eyes, special treatment, resentment coursed through Invidia’s veins. Thoughts such as, ‘If I had been born first, I would have gotten the kingdom’, crossed Invidia’s mind, and the older she got, the worse the need to inherit the kingdom grew inside her heart until it enveloped her completely.
Years passed as Invidia slowly went crazy with her craving of power, and then one year, everything changed. The queen became quite ill, losing her vision and feeling only the need to sleep. The best medical expert in the lands couldn’t heal her, so she was to be doomed to fate in a matter of days. Invidia saw this as her chance, and she called to the heavens, asking for a wish to be granted. Since the god Osiris of the Underworld favored her, he ascended from the underworld and asked for her to name what she wanted, and it would be granted.
“I wish for the snake of early times to bite my sister and preceding heir, Felcia, on the night of the death of the current ruler of Isis,” She smiled, crooked and insane. Osiris nodded, as he was in charge of the underworld and would be happy to have the beauty that was Invidia’s sister with him.
That very night, Felcia and Invidia’s mother passed in her sleep from the unknown illness. Only minutes after this event occurred, the residents of the castle awoke to screaming from Felcia’s chambers, as the snake promised from Osiris had bitten her. Both dead, the throne was left to Invidia, who felt no grief.
At first Invidia was quite content with ruling Isis, as it was a wonderful place, but only a few years had passed before the goddess of protection, Bastet, found out what Osiris had done.
Enraged, she cast the kingdom Isis to the depths of the ocean and punished Osiris and the kingdom by forcing immortality upon every resident in the kingdom, including Invidia, so that they could never die and go the underworld in peace.
Invidia looked upon her once perfect kingdom with horror and loathing, now wishing that she could be free of the wretched place. She wished that she could be like those upon land who were not forced to live in the seas for eternity, and try as she might, Invidia will never be free of her kingdom.
The kingdom of Isis still exists below the ocean depths, far from where anyone can reach it, and because of this Invidia, Latin for Envy, lives on for all eternity, wanting to be anyone but herself and anywhere but her home.
