“No way! You’re telling me that he’s that Levi? The Levi?”

“He’s not that big of a deal,” Oruo huffs.

“Oh shut up, Oruo.” Petra rolls her eyes before going starry-eyed once more. “[First], surely you must know about him too.”

You hesitate. Sure, you did know him, but did you really know him?

“I’ve…” You pause. “I’ve seen him around,” is what you offer.

“Stories go that he’s only the best titan-slayer in the regiment! It must have taken him years to become so legend—”

You cut her off. “But Petra, he’s only been a part of the scouts for a couple of weeks.”

“What?” The light in her eyes don’t die, but reality’s grip is apparent on her. “How do you know that?”

“Because…” Why are you so reluctant to tell the truth? “I was here when Erwin first brought him in.”

“That’s not what I heard.” Petra suddenly looks thoughtful. “Do you know where he came from then? I’ve been told that he’s been captain for a while now.”

Now that’s new information for you. “I don’t know about the captain part,” you confess, “but he was…” You hesitate again, “from what I’ve heard, anyway…”

“What is it?” she begs eagerly.

Why does it hurt? you think as you finish your statement, “He is strong, but he’s far from perfect.”

You can’t help but smile, and you feel the difference in this smile compared to those of previous weeks.

“Did you know?” You grin at Petra, genuinely this time. You have to close your eyes to avoid tears falling. “Up until very recently, he was a thug in the capital’s Underground.”

“Wh-what!”

You laugh, and Petra grasps your arm.

“You’re not lying, are you! Th-that’s one story I haven’t heard! Are you sure you’re not close to him? I…I—”

“No, we’re not close.” You don’t know whether you’re telling the truth or lying. “But what I can tell you for sure about Levi is this…”

All those times you saved me…

“He is a good person.”

“Ah, you’re so lucky!” She sighs wistfully after a brief pause in your reminiscing, making Oruo pout even more. “Say, have you ever talked to him? He just seems so unapproachable…” She bites her lower lip.

“He seems unapproachable.” At your response, Petra looks up at the same time that you look down. “But I promise if you talk to him, you’ll learn so much more about him – more than what stories can tell. He’s really not all that bad.” The sight of that tear trekking down his face comes to mind. “Just…misunderstood.”

The sight of him standing directly across from where you stood…

“Petra, I need to go.”

“Eh?” Her look of bewilderment barely registers, but it doesn’t need to. You’re already running back down the hallway before she can even call your name.

“Wh-what was that about, do you think?” Petra looks at Oruo the second you’re out of sight.

“…”

“Oruo?”

The blonde male shakes his head, changing his line of view from where they had been following your disappearing form. “I don’t think you’d understand, Petra.”
