Description
“I’m sorry,” you mumble, unable to look Levi in the eye. Like Isabel, he’s gazing out the window, but where she’s looking in awe, he’s regarding the streets in silent distaste and possible discomfort. Guilt slaps you in the face when you realize it’s all your fault. Had you not acted on impulse, you could have saved them and avoided capture. You bite your lower lip, drawing a prick of blood.“Don’t be,” Farlan reassures from his seat across you. “It’s not your fault, [First]. We would have been captured anyway, and if you hadn’t come running along, we would have been separated. It’s better to be together, don’t you think?”
“But if I’d told you sooner that I wasn’t sick, you wouldn’t have gone out to get medicine for me. You wouldn’t have run into members of the Survey Corps and-”
“Hey. We were bound to run into these guys sooner or later. At some point, we would have been captured anyway. So no regrets.”
You don’t look convinced, but you don’t argue any further. Even if you want to, you can’t because the carriage comes to a halt, and the door is promptly swung open. A gruff looking soldier greets you with a cold stare.
“Stay here. I’m going to go ahead and report your arrival,” he informs as the four of you step out of the carriage. You don’t skip the vicious look in his eye as he eyes you one by one; no doubt, he saw you as nothing more than trash picked up from off the street. Once he’s sure that none of you will try anything funny, he walks off.
“Hey Levi. You remember the plan, right? Tell me if you’re unsure of anything,” Farlan whispers to the dark-haired male when he’s sure the soldier is out of earshot.
Levi’s eyes narrow, but he doesn’t say anything. He almost looks frustrated at Farlan’s words, but the way the shadows frame his face tells you that he’s thinking about something else too. You look at him worriedly, unable to decipher his thoughts.
“Trust me, Levi. Please.”
The two men lock eyes, both of their gazes equally intent. You can almost hear the silent pleading pour from Farlan as he tries to get Levi to understand, but the arrival of the soldier spares the other male from returning an answer.
“You three come with me. The [h/c] girl stays here though.”
“What? You can’t be serious,” Farlan protests but the soldier’s glare silences him.
“Erwin's request. You have no say here, so shut your mouth, filthy scum. Now hurry up. We don’t have all day.”
“[First],” Farlan’s gaze switches to you. You return the look, determined not to let your mask fall.
“I’ll be okay,” you say, although you’re unsure of your own words. You don’t know what they want with you, and to be honest, you’re scared. You don’t want to be left alone again, and you most definitely do not want to be separated from Levi and the rest of the group. Despite still being on relatively low terms, you’d come to genuinely care about them. They were the family you never had, and the past couple of weeks have been the best days of your life. It was selfish of you, but you didn’t want that to be taken away. Not when things were supposed to be getting better.
“No! I refuse to leave you behind!” Isabel pushes past Farlan and grabs your hand. She looks past your shoulder to glare at the man. “If we go, we go together! Trying to separate us…what kind of monsters do you breed here?!”
“How dare you talk to me like that, you filthy scum? Know your place here!” the man roars angrily, raising his hand as if to strike you both, but Farlan stands in the way, shielding the two of you.
“At least tell us why you want to isolate [First], sir.”
The man glowers down at him, but lowers his fist.
“Like I know! It wasn't my decision to make, so be grateful, brats. I would have had your heads long ago if the choice was mine. Now if you’re done asking questions, let’s get a move on. We’re already late as it is.”
Farlan nods, looking over his shoulder and gesturing with his head for Isabel to follow him. She grimaces, but reluctantly releases your hand to obey. She shoots you a quick look asking you to be careful, and you nod to ease a bit of her fear. Your self-assurance veers in the opposite direction. But when something slips into your hand, your anxiety is momentarily forgotten.
“If he tries anything, kill him,” Levi doesn’t look at you as he walks past you, but you know you’re not hearing things. You watch the retreating figures of your friends while inconspicuously slipping the object up your sleeve and concealing it between the two fabrics. Your eyes don't leave your friends until someone clears their throat from behind you.
"I don’t believe we had a proper introduction earlier. My name is Erwin Smith. May I ask for yours?"
Turning, you meet eyes with the blue-eyed blonde himself. Your fingers instinctively twitch towards the sharp object Levi had handed you moments ago, and you growl.
"What do you want with me?"
