I think I know how this happened: Misty here wandered into a section of the Viridian Forest where Parasect are at the top of the food chain. She approached a dead tree, and a group of these feral fungi attacked her to defend their territory. The alpha male, a shiny Parasect, then stabbed her in the back with its/his claw(does a fungus have a gender?), injecting a special kind of spore into her bloodstream. And then this picture happened.
(BTW, the color of Parasect's mushroom seems to change from game to game. What's up with that?)

This was her reward. This was what she got for taking a step towards bonding with bug type Pokemon. After being scared of them for so long she chose to finally be friends with one. A Paras she found in the grasses by her gym. And this was the results. Apparently this Pokemon's spores were more potent than usual. The gym leader not aware of this when making contact with this Pokemon. Now she found herself turning into a Parasect. She knew she shouldn't have trusted bug type Pokemon. Cause now she was gonna be one...
