As if the constant invasion of his personal space wasn't enough, the fact that it often came without warning had gradually wound Kage Kirkwood's once-impassive composure into a bundle of jumping nerves. So, when a sudden weight fell across the back of his shoulders that morning, the response was instantaneous: every muscle near the point of impact tensed, the pencil he'd held in his hand dropped to the floor, and blood rushed hot to the surface of his face.

“Just me,” murmured a voice next to his ear, reassuring and irritatingly calm.

Kage shot a sidelong stare at the face propped on top of his shoulder blade. “Torin, what are you doing?” he grumbled finally.

A wide, impish smirk spread across the other's face. “Absolutely nothing,” was Torin's lighthearted reply. “What're you doing?”
