actually, the model isn't thaaat complex, i just put a lot of effort into the texture and lighting .

hey there,

hey aaron.
first i unwrap the whole mess, then i use the uv-layout in photoshop and start building the texture.almost all plating you see on the model is just a bump-map, including the dents and damage.
with the plating in place, i start painting the dirt layer for the diffuse-map, followed by the text, the red decals and some more detailing. the base layer of the diffuse-map is a metal texture.
the last step is the specular-map, which is - luckily - the least work. here, i just copy the metal texture and ramp up it's contrast. then i copy the dirt layer als well as the decals layer and set their color to black, so that they do not reflect at all.
put it into a material, slap it on your model, set some nice lights and - tataa! you're already done .
