Description this year's rescue...
a baby opossum
he was being "played with" by the dog of a neighbor of a friend (the same friend that brought me jack, the baby squirrel [link] ). the neighbor proclaims himself as "not an animal lover, but i just couldnt leave him out there like that". he asked my friend what he should do and i was immediately called. when i arrived this little guy was in a cardboard box on a soggy towel in a dark garage... the box and dark garage were ok but that soggy towel did nothing for keeping this baby warm! the neighbor said he had tried to wash off the dirt and stuff and thats why the towel was wet... he had also put in a little saucer with some mushed up dog biscuit and a little bowl of milk. neither of these appeared to have been touched which isnt surprising...
this little guy may have teeth, but he's still too young to use them in anything more than a display of fright (the opossum snarl). i scooped him up and wrapped him in my sweatshirt and kept him close to me so i could warm him and keep him secure. he seemed to like that idea as he slept like that the whole way home. after doing a LOT of reading i found what seemed like a sensible recipe for a formula. these guys have special needs when it comes to diet and i want o make sure i dont mess that up! no people food for this little fella... all organic babyfood and esbilac... he took well to the food when it was offered with a dropper, but had no concern for it yet when in a shallow bowl. good to know.
so, he made it through the night with flying colors and seems to be doing well today. im keeping the box warm with a hot water bottle and in the quietest room in the house. no contact with the other pets as i just dont think that would work out well

so it looks like ive got another little buddy. i have no idea what to call him while he is here...

any ideas?

i suppose it could be shortened to "AA" which would in a round-about fashion be appropriate cause he weighs no more than 3 or 4 AA batteries.....

im sure something will come up! thanks for lookin though

you can bet on that!!! i have a whole slew of them from the squirrel. and im taking better notes this time so theres an actual diary of care and feedings and such. geesh, its almost like a medical log!
but pics? oh yeah! this is only day two so keep an eye out - if i do this right he will get bigger and bigger and healthier over the coming weeks
the squirrel was much easier though - he slept through the night! opossums are nocturnal so im up all night, plus all my daily chores and care of the other animals
it'll be ok once i get a schedule/routine going. plus, like i said, if i do it right, it will be so rewarding to let him go off on his own

Thomas? Linneas? Edward? Iunno. Are you looking for a specific type of name?

yabbles In reply to Senraikin [2009-04-08 21:36:05 +0000 UTC]

well, i think it should be something strong... or courageous... like maybe "columbus" because he's off having wild adventures and finding new frontiers and beating the odds when things look bleak...
i saw on a website about opossums where these people had one they called "theo". it was short for the clever "theo possum" (the opossum)... i thought that was cute.
i would like a clever or insightful name... examples:

my coati is named "java" for his being native to south america and full of energy, just like coffee

my one cat is named "queue" which is french for line or tail or braid. queue's tail is ALWAYS curled at the end... a "curly queue"

my other cat is named "goblin" because he is a little monster what hunts and eats anything

i had a wallaby named "echo" because of her big ears which she would swivel around to listen to everything... like radar dishes... echo location

its tough to come up with names for critters in this house!

Naming things isn't something I'm good at. Hmm..powerful. The names I could think of are...

Romulus- Legendary founder of Ancient Rome
Napoleon- French Dictator
Robert E. Lee- Commander of the Confederate army
Jason- Legendary Greek Hero

So far, how's the little guy? Like, do you know yet what he's like? And I agree. I can't come up with a good name for a ferret I'll be getting in several weeks.

well its been only one night but he's eating well and doesnt seem to be injured from his experience with the dog. after i feed him he gets a good grooming and potty time then he gets a little bit of a walk-around on the bed. he doesnt seem overly stressed, just out of his element. his mama isnt here and thats all he knows. i have hope for him, though...
he's very fluffy... a LOT smaller than his fur lets him look, but he's far enough along that i believe i can get him the rest of the way!

thank you for your suggestions! those are all great names

(years ago i had ferrets... "bailey and godiva". bailey was cream color and godiva was chocolately all over. even her mask was brown! she ended up being called "diva" for short )

I know which is why I asked. Aw, he sounds so adorable. ^^ I would like to hold him or another possum.

Yer welcome and thanks. ;D

(Aw, sounds cute. My mother wants me to give mine a cute name. So I thought of Suci, named after my mother's albino ferret, which was named Suci.)
