It's strange, I have a hard time feeling satisfied with having a team do the "we were just hired" thing in these PMD groups, and yet I see others do it and enjoy the setup so much.

I agree that it can be odd for characters to wander into some city and think "hey let's work here". On the other hand, I feel like guilds are an easy way to make a living. Recruits get food and housing, which is more than what most people had during medieval times, or in underdeveloped countries today. There are no prerequisites for becoming a recruit. Sure, it's dangerous work at times, but my characters are not the type to avoid risk. xD

Definitely true, both points! A desire to avoid danger generally doesn't lead to employment in a field like this, at least not without a lot of peer pressure.
