Description
Alright, so in honor of my 50,000 kiriban I promised you all a tutorial and here it is! This is a look into the theory behind how I do my lineart. Take a look and maybe you'll find it helpful. Let me know your thoughts!I would like to credit Tentopet: [link]
For her wonderful line wight tutorial which first introduced me to the idea of drawing with lines of various widths. Be sure to check her tutorial out!
Please keep in mind that the last drawing especially reflects my own personal style and technique in how I apply line width and is in no way the best or only to draw your lines. There are people who find the airbrush technique I like distracting, so a lot of it comes down to personal preference.
Feel free to download the tutorial for future reference or to add it to any tutorial clubs or groups, I'll accept straight away!
Thank you!

Thanks for the tutorial, helps me to make next step in improving my drawings. I have a very elementary, maybe even stupid sounding question, but I am a newbie, so - Is there something like variable-width pen(cil) ? Having traditional non-computer hardware in mind, since I know there are pressure-sensitive tablets for varying line widths

When I draw traditionally I use felt tip pens, Sakura Microns specifically and they draw at uniform width, what I do is I literally thicken the lines where I choose by either going over the line a few times or drawing a second line and filling in the space.
There are also brush-like pens and artists markers and such.

Very cute lineart! You might even want to consider submitting your lineart to lineart clubs to get your work around.

Hey I just wanted to say thank you for the tips! I usually try to vary the thickness of my lines but I had the same problem where the sketch would look better than the inked lines. I never thought of doing it the way you showed with the hairtie. Thank you~

MangaStudio Ex 4.0, I use the pen tool at 1200 DPI. I also use Sakura Microns for my traditionally done linearts.

I always support tutorial makers since they're doing something to help others, out of nothing really but the goodness of their hearts.
However, I can't help but disagreeing a little on your last "after" lineart. The broken lines are broken in the place where they're the thickest and without any kind of tapering... You mentioned yourself earlier that it can work wonders on places there the lines get narrow, giving it a very wispy look. It comes off as very distracting to me, unfortunately, so for the purposes of the tutorial, I wouldn't recommend it. Maybe a quick poll could help finding out which style appeals the most to people.
Wonderful tutorial! Pleasant read I shall go forth!

Thanks for your crit!
The last pic your mention is meant to be more of a look into how I personally work with linearts, not so much as a how-to like the other tips. I know some people find my airbrushing a little distracting but it's a stylistic choice I personally like. I may edit the tutorial to clarify this point tho, so thanks!

Wow I'm glad you reacted like that to my critique. I just had a conversation about crits on dA with a friend, and I was right in saying that constructive criticism is welcomed by the mature contributing artists of dA.
Thanks for your reply

I think it's a shame that people who can't take crits ruin it for people who want them because people get afraid to give constructive criticism.
No prob.
