Description I realized that, despite doing an obnoxious amount of Medic fanart, I hadn't actually done any pictures of him that weren't either gag pictures or porn. Since I'm never totally satisfied with anything I do, I'm not totally satisfied with this, but here it is.

What I want to know from you, dear audience, is the following:

Are the shine effects too intrusive, or not bright enough?

Is the image too dark? My screen is set at a very bright setting, generally, and I've found when I'm on other computers, my pictures end up being too muddy.

Normally, this is where I'd put something clever, but it's 3 in the morning and I can't think of anything clever. Though it's not terribly relevant, while I was working on this, I had the ending theme from The Room, (Cradel of Forest) stuck in my head. The soundtrack was about the only good thing that came from that game, IMO.

edit: Did some lighting adjustment as per suggestions I'd recieved, and tried to make his ubersaw look more interesting. Also, blood effects! Fuck yeah!

I think the lighting and shading here is really effective and striking. On my LCD, this isn't too dark; the trees get a little lost, but in art, it's OK to lose some edges and the trees are ideal for that here.

Yeah... I wasn't concerned about the trees being indistinct, I just didn't want them to look unrecognizable as trees.

medic is the most unappreciated class i think. without a medic the team is nothing! much respect to the medic. i can't wait for meet the medic, i hope it's as good as this pic!

I kind of find that Medic is the easiest class to play... not having to focus as much on the other team beyond avoiding them is so much more relaxing than firing desperately and hoping you manage to kill something.

I felt a little trepidation at the announcement that they were releasing a Medic trailer, but the fact that they've taken so long to get it together suggests that the people at Valve realized how difficult it would be to make a good trailer for the class and didn't take any easy ways out.

well i guess that is true, but i have seen BAD medics before, but i guess what makes them bad is that they don't do their job, or prematurely uber.. or not uber at all. or try to be combact medic. so if you have a bad medic on your team, it's really annoying and frustrating. i have friends that everyone is happy when they play medic because they feel like part of the team and do what they're supposed to do. but as far as easiest class to play, i'd probably say heavy because of how straightforward and guns-blazing it is.

and i know that meet the medic was "almost done" according to someone who visited valve, but you know how slow they can be when it comes to cinematics. valve time and all.

I've enjoyed playing Medic since it's made me better at being situationally aware while not requiring me to help the team by actually managing to kill anything. (I'm not great at FPS) Being someone who enjoys healing in multiplayer games, I at least find it fun to chase around my teammates and try to top them up.

Using the ubercharge when you're in a random game, which I generally am- I only have one or two friends who play TF2 these days- can be a real toss-up, and it's always frustrating when you try banking it and get blown up, or charge in with someone only to discover that there's nothing in the courtyard to kill, but I figure it's better to not second-guess yourself. The game doesn't punish you too badly for dying, at least.

Lol Episode 3.

I saw this laate last night/this morning and wanted to wait until I was awake to leave a thoughtful comment---I noticed the added blood right away! The whole thing looks fantastic on my screen. Have to say my favourite part is his collar whipping around his neck 8_8 Sehr schΓΆn...

Thank you! Er ist sehr hΓΌbsch....

I have more than a bit of a yen for older guys, and I love doing obnoxiously dramatic night scenes with lots of dark space, so....

The shine works out very well, it makes me think that he's watching the storm and a bolt of lightening just struck in front of him, it's very cool.
As for the 'muddy' look, you could maybe put a little more contrast in the trees to make it more obvious that they're trees, but beyond that, it works incredibly well with the composition and really makes the scene LOOK like it's in the middle of a big nasty thunderstorm.
Most awesome.

The shine was supposed to be coming from an unseen floodlight, though that's not too relevant. XD I went ahead and decided to brighten it, adjusting the opacity on some of the linework so that it didn't look as ill-fitting. Thank you for the feedback, by the way!

You're very welcome!
And I love the addition of the blood effects you did, very cool.

It think it looks great. I can't help about the brightness, because my own screen is actually way too dark in the first place. ^^'

Nuts... XD It just annoys me because I'm never sure how dark or bright the average monitor is, and I always feel like my pictures are too light and low-saturation until I see them on a darker screen.

Yeah me too, I feel like I've never had an average screen to start with.

I think it looks lovely. The Medic himself looks fine IMO. I think that maybe the forest in the upper-right might stand to be illuminated a little more. I think that's a lightning flash? I couldn't tell what it was a first; if the trees near it were more illuminated, it might be more obvious.

Thanks for the feedback! It is supposed to be a lightning strike... I wasn't sure if it was a bit dull.

Atmospheric stuff like that is always fun to render XD I imagine it is not easy to find the exact reference images you want for something like that.

I just had to wing it. I've always liked doing really dramatic-looking night scenes, so it's something I've had practice at, at least. XD

I'd love to see the story behind this picture! (his ubersaw is getting a nice bath despite what's going on at least)

It all depends on what the lightsource shining on him is (it looks like a spotlight from a building or a light from a nearby window), but just think you could throw in a little more contrast if you wanted to.

I really like the glittery cast of the light on him because of the raindrops refracting the light. That's a nice touch.

do you work with a flatscreen by any chance? I had the same problem with distinguishing dark and light in my own stuff back before I could afford a good monitor.

When I lurk around on TFchan, I see how they shear your wool down to the roots sometimes in workshop. I respect you because you do SO much work from start to finish, and you know how to take criticism really well...I fail to do either of these because I'm scared.

There's not really a story, I just wanted to draw a serious-looking Medic standing in a liminal space.

The glow effect on the left is (presumably) coming from a floodlight on or near the building. I'd originally had it quite bright, but I felt like it was too intrusive when dropped over the linework. I guess I can try messing with the opacity on the lines to see if I can make it look better.... I started using Sai instead of Photoshop because I wanted to have less options for effects, but I still spend too much time jerking around with layers and opacity. DX

I'm happy to have found a place where I can get frank criticism. I'm terrible about missing small mistakes, and when you've spent literally hours jimmying around with a drawing, it becomes harder and harder to see what you've missed, or even what you've gotten right.
