I went to art college, but it's not a necessity for learning how to animate. 
Water Balloon Bounce <-- Learning how to use timing, weight, and reading about then practicing different basic animation principles is a huge step in understanding animation. It took me a long time to get the wave principle, that was one of the harder things for me to learn and visualize well.
Running Cycle <--- then you study different kinds of real life movement- look at videos, draw from reference, watch your pets and study how they move, practice anatomy.... it may sound really intimidating at first but you focus on each part at a time.
