Description
i wasn't sure if i should upload this, but the photos i used didn't have a copyright so i think it's okay. not to mention that they aren't going to look exactly like the photo and they're collaged so it's not like i'm stealing the image.i searched for a ton of reference images and some books. i started gathering reference material back in december, but slacked off cuz i seem to do things in phases. for a while i may draw anime stuff or a certain type of animal then i move on to a different topic. that's why i didn't get more done back when i started. elephants are one hell of a challenge, but i find watercolor makes it easier to get good texture. it takes so much longer when using a pen or pencil. anyway, these are just for practice to see how well watercolor works for me. i did a few other sketches in pencil, but i'm trying to aviod uploading anything from books or other copyrighted sources.
i'm planning on making giftart for one of my favorite artists, sterlingruinsfall337. i would have liked to have had something done back around christmas time, since i think one of things on her wishlist was anything elephant related. what i had in mind was a painting with possibly her fursona or another character and an elephant. doesn't sound very creative, but with enough inspiration and reference material i think i should be able to make something nice. i am enjoying the challenge and once i got the hang of it, elephants are kind of fun to make.
the animals in this painting were sketched in derwent watercolor pencils and some derewent inktense pencils. i used a few brushes, but i also tried dipping the pencils in water. i wish i had a way of filming as i paint cuz it's difficult to explain how i went about gettiing the results. perhaps someday i will.
i'll try to list my sources, but it'll be incomplete since i didn't think to write down all the books from the library back when i first started this project. i shall type out what i can remember and whether i used it or not i'll list it anyway.
elephant by steve bloom- the best elephant photography i found. it's a beautiful book,so if you have the chance check it out, give it a look.
elephant reflections photos by karl ammann and text by dale peterson- also a wonderful source of photos.
The illustrated encyclopedia of elephants : from their origins and evolution to their ceremonial and working relationship with man consultant: Dr. S. K. Eltringham.
Elephants : a cultural and natural history / Karl Gröning ; text, Martin Saller.
Faithful elephants : a true story of animals, people, and war / Yukio Tsuchiya ; illustrated by Ted Lewin ; translated by Tomoko Tsuchiya Dykes. this is a children's book and yet it will make you cry if you read it.
i also watched operation dumbo drop for the first time and loved it. well, that's enough text for now.
