Formally, it starts in September, and ends in December. But main ceremony is held in December, at which horse racing, archery, Sumo, and dances are offered to Kami sama transferred to a provisional shrine.
This ceremony is awesome, I strongly recommend you to see that if you trip to Japan in winter.
