Description
Two endangered species of Central China: the red panda (Ailurus fulgens) and the golden snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus roxellana). These two animals are particularly well known and cute reddish-pelted animals that are sadly disappearing due to habitat loss. The golden snub-nosed monkey is just one out of ten extant species that are part of a clade of odd-nosed asian leaf-eating monkeys, with all those species being endangered or critically endangered. These visually diverse primates may risk extinction if we don't do our best to prevent their demise.
The red panda, despite sharing its name with a species of bear that it shares the habitat and diet with, is the sole surviving species of the Ailuridae family, a family of musteloids that was rather diverse in the past, but is now restricted to this herbivorous skittish animal. The red panda split from its closest modern relatives, mustelids (weasels, otters, martens and wolverines) and procyonids (raccoons, ringtails, cacomistles, coatis, kinkajous and olingos), almost 35 million years ago. This relic of an ancient and almost lost evolutionary line should be preserved.
