Description
Ypupiara lopai is a species of unenlagiid, that has been described this year, and was uncovered from the Marília Formation of Brazil, dating to the Late Cretaceous period, some 70-66 million years ago. It measured around 2-3 meters in length. This dinosaur is peculiar because I like to affectionately call it the "YP dinosaur", even though it wasn't named after me at all. Its generic name means "the one who lives in the water", probably a reference to an assumed piscivorous diet (even though unenlagiids don't seem to display any concrete evidence of specialized fish-eating) and also fatefully ironic given the fate of the only specimen of this species was destroyed in the 2018 fire of the National Museum of Brazil.
