Description Oof... I tend to avoid gushing on my own artworks, but in fact this compilation of my own submissions is more or less a replacement of another submission I could make... though the deadline arrived and so, I had no time to think on another thing to do, so here you have. These are all of the creatures (in scale) I submitted for Hyrotrioskjan's Lost World spec contest, focused on portraying a realistic interpretation on Maple-White Land, the fictional setting of the 1912 novel The Lost World, by Arthur Conan Doyle. I tried to address several animals that I thought would be relevant for what the contest required.

1. Stalking toads (the queue of toads on the bottom), was my first submission. Given that i was not very informed on endemic fauna from actual tepuis, other than the bush toads, I came up with ideas to make proper relatives of these to inhabit this unique tepui.

2. The ovoviviparous rainfrog (small frog at the left) and the giant water coral (the snake) was my personal attempt at making two animals for the price of one submission. Given that the tepuis are more easily a breeding ground for unique amphibian and squamate species, I thought it was wise to emphasize that. Though to connect the frog and the snake in one coherent link, I decided to connect them both through their reproductive method. We just so happen to have an ovoviviparous frog in South America and snakes are well known to be ovoviviparous. I wanted to make a snake, as I thought it would be a good reference to the giant snakes from the book, swimming in the lake around. I believe that would be the most realistic reinterpretation of a creature from the book, rather than explain a creature simillar to a stegosaur or megaloceros or something.

3. The sprinting whiptail, or sprintail (the bipedal lizard on the right), was my attempt at making a realistic bipedal lizard, and ultimately is my favourite piece, as it was worked to be scientifically accurate at its best. Bipedal lizards were largely used as an attempt to explain non-avian theropod dinosaur sightings, but I wanted to give a much more accurate approach to the concept of a bipedal lizard, more than trying to make it like a theropod analog, though this could kind of work like a small theropod, like a compie or something (which I don't think it exists in the novel, but whatevs). This one took a nice amount of research on my part, so I am most proud for this one.

4. The quilled shrew (the small brown mammalian speck just above the stalking toads) is my attempt at escaping myself from the cold-blooded menagerie below. I didn't wanted to make a mammal that could exist elsewhere, so a cryptic species of shrew seemed like a good fit. As for why it has quills, well it is reminiscent of my original idea of making a mammalian stegosaur or something, but I didn't think that would come out very realistic. In an alternate timeline, though, you would be enjoying a spiky skunk.

5. The american gharial (the big boi) was my final attempt at making a proper and genuine ghost lineage, a survivor from an otherwise extinct and recognizable prehistoric lineage. The american gharial is a late surviving gryposuchine, which is pretty small, just 1,5 meters long, so to survive in the tepui. Gryposuchines are largely marine, but fortunetly there were a few species that lived in freshwater, so I settled with making this one a survivor from that freshwater lineage.

So yeah... that's pretty much what I made. And the only thing I have left to say is congratulations to everyone else who has participated, with submissions that may be way better and more interesting than mine. I hope many of us can enjoy the acceptance of our own submissions, and I wish the best luck. Was a fun contest. I hope something simillar can be made again.
