Warning!! hugeee file~just to let you guys know, this is not the incorrect/correct way to design characters, this is the way I create characters and I do hope its some use to some of you lot! I'm more than likely going to try and take on other animals in the future! but I hope this helps in the meantime ;;

Now this is just way too helpful! I have to agree with *Olive-Owl , most of the species (same examples as that commenter had given as well) in the Sonic fan-base are way over-used. It's somehow sad that they didn't take the effort to do even a fact look-up while in the process of creating their character.
(After seeing your guide, I felt compelled to check on my characters to see if their appearance fit their species.

Wonderful, WONDERFUL tutorial.
I'm glad you took the time to research and look up actual animal species. Not too many people I know of take the time to search up reference pictures of the animal they're designing, so you get a lot of dull, cliche characters in the Sonic community because of it.
Just overall excellent evaluation, and very interesting characters!

awww thank you! I really do deeply encourage a lot of people to research... otherwise like you said, they end up being one big blur :C
like a lot of people tell me that they shouldn't use hedgehog or echidna characters... where.... they can! but i can see how it is a problem since they use a sonic templates rather than comming up with it from scratch..

And I find it silly when people say "no hedgehog or echidnas!". I guess people want to avoid them in case they drastically follow Sonic and Knuckles original designs like you stated? I've seen some creative hedgehogs and echidnas. You just gotta dig for them that's all >>'
