Practicable and fabulous.
Your horizontal calendar looks fine, mine still has a list of the day-names after month/year. Why?

as i was mucking around with the code, i noticed the spacing between the last date and the day of the week was a little tight. to adjust this to your preference, just add more spaces in the last line of code (sed s"/$/ $(date +%A)/")
this will give you two spaces:
sed s"/$/ $(date +%A)/"
this will give you four spaces:
sed s"/$/ $(date +%A)/"
... and so on.

sorry, newbie mistake... html ignores extra spaces... :sigh:
just add spaces (literally hit the spacebar) between "$/" and "$(" until you're happy with the desired effect.

whoops! i should've explained that one better!
ctrl+q+esc is a keyboard command where you press the "control" key, the "Q" key and the "esc" key simultaneously. when you do that inside of the Edit Script window in geektool - press the ellipsis (...) to the right of the command line - it produces an invisible "escape" character.
you can tell you've created the "escape" character by using your arrow keys to navigate through the code. when it takes two presses of the arrow key to move forward or backward, you've found an invisible "escape" character!
the "escape" character is used for formatting output (bold, colors, etc). there can be multiple text formatting sequence numbers separated by a ";" and ending with an "m".
example: [1;4;32m...[0m will display bold, underlined green text (represented by ... ). the [0m is important as it indicates the end of the formatting so any text following it is rendered as "normal display".
below are ANSI codes for the other formatting options.
attributes
0 normal display
1 bold
4 underline (mono only)
5 blink on
7 reverse video on
8 nondisplayed (invisible)
foreground colors
30 black
31 red
32 green
33 yellow
34 blue
35 magenta
36 cyan
37 white
background colors
40 black
41 red
42 green
43 yellow
44 blue
45 magenta
46 cyan
47 white
having said all that, if someone just wants the above code to work, and doesn't want to muck around with shell command coding, simply copy the code in my above comment and the "escape" characters should go along for the ride. paste it into the geektool command line and... enjoy!
hope this helps more than confuses
and thanks again for the awesome desktop themes!

maybe a stupid question: but how can I hide the month, the year and the days of the week so that it only shows the numbers?

sweet desktop!
If anyone is having trouble with the red text issue, i may have a solution... a few ctrl+q+esc combos were the key to this problem.
below is the code i am using now (and it has been tested for all months and all days).
echo `cal`" " |
sed "s/[^0-9]$(date +%e | sed s'/ //')\([^0-9]\)/ $(date +%e | sed 's/ *\([0-9]*\)/[31m\1[0m/')\1/" |
sed s'/ $//' |
sed s'/Su Mo Tu We Th Fr Sa//g' |
sed s'/ / \. /g' |
sed s'/\([a-z]\)[ ]\./\1/g' |
sed s'/\.[ ]*\./ /'|
sed s"/$/ $(date +%A)/"
i found that inserting ctrl+q+esc (represented by in the above code) before and after [31m and [0m worked a treat.
Hope this helps!
